Sharon’s Shocking Betrayal: Did Chicago Med Just Ruin Her Character?

In the 19th episode of Chicago Med season 10, titled “The Stories We Tell Ourselves,” Sharon’s (S Epatha Merkerson) character development took an unexpected turn as the plot centered predominantly on her personal issue with her boyfriend. Throughout Chicago Med season 10, Sharon has faced numerous challenges, most notably being attacked in her office by a stalker that she couldn’t prove was harassing her. This traumatic event marked the beginning of her season, and it seemed as though she was making progress in overcoming the trauma. However, this episode saw Sharon dealing with a less dramatic problem instead.

In “The Tales We Spin,” Sharon advocates pushing back the deadline for negotiations on the nurses’ new contract, all while managing a personal romantic complication. The narrative kicks off with Dennis’ daughter, Alex, unexpectedly appearing – unaware that her father is dating Sharon. Predictably, Sharon feels let down by Dennis’ lack of disclosure, and his subsequent justifications for not informing Alex earlier about their relationship. This tension might not be resolved yet and could potentially fuel the dramatic Chicago Med season 10 finale.

Chicago Med Season 10, Episode 19 Focuses On Sharon’s Romance More Than The Nurse Strike

The Negotiation Storyline Mostly Happens Off-Screen

In “The Stories We Tell Ourselves,” the strife between Sharon and Dennis becomes the main focus. Following Sharon’s accusation toward Dennis about hiding their relationship from Alex, he attempts to rectify the situation by arranging a meal with all three at a restaurant. However, this meeting escalates the conflict when Dennis learns from Alex that Sharon had told him their relationship was casual. These events unfold throughout the movie’s duration.

Instead, Sharon’s nurse negotiation narrative predominantly unfolds off-camera, limited to a few scenes. Once negotiations fail, Sharon proposes extending the agreement by a week to give administration time to arrange a fresh deal. Meanwhile, Maggie has numerous on-screen interactions with the nurses. After making this proposal, Sharon becomes absent from the storyline until the end of the episode, when Maggie confronts her about the allegation that Sharon was preparing temporary replacements for the striking nurses.

Why It’s Important To Focus On Sharon’s Role In The Nurse Strike

Her Relationship With Maggie Leaves Her With Divided Loyalties

In the nurse strike plot, although Sharon’s involvement seems limited until the final scene of the episode, she plays a crucial role. While Sharon is embroiled in her struggle with Dennis, it’s Maggie who progresses the storyline by backing Sharon among the nurses and eventually uncovering the deception about her trust. This leads to a significant showdown between them, but the scene fails to resonate due to Sharon’s lack of screen time during the storyline. However, this absence adds impact when Maggie discovers that Sharon has deceived her, creating a surprising and powerful moment in the narrative.

As a cinephile, I believe the plot twist with Sharon calling in scabs could have been more impactful if it had been subtly foreshadowed earlier in the film. Instead of revealing her decision outright, perhaps there could’ve been a scene where Sharon makes an ambiguous phone call, leaving viewers guessing about her intentions. This would create anticipation and prepare us for the surprise, without spoiling it.

On the other hand, if Sharon simply vanishes from the storyline without any warning, it feels like the plot twist is contrived. A better approach might be to show Sharon grappling with her decision in a more obvious way, giving the audience a chance to witness her inner conflict. For instance, she could have scenes where she’s torn between standing by her principles and succumbing to external pressures related to the strike.

By showing these struggles, we would not only be prepared for the plot twist but also empathize more with Sharon’s character, making the storyline more engaging and realistic.

How Chicago Med Can Balance Sharon’s Personal & Professional Arc

It Needs To Make Room For Both Stories

In the upcoming plotline of the medical drama, it’s expected that Sharon will have a more significant involvement in the strike story, given her recent betrayal has been exposed. To learn from past mistakes, such as the mishandling of the Sharon stalker storyline on Chicago Med, the writers should make sure to address both Sharon’s professional and personal struggles equally. This means giving equal focus to future strike-related events and romantic developments involving Sharon, ensuring a balanced narrative that acknowledges her past traumas and current experiences.

To ensure a balanced narrative, it’s crucial for “Chicago Med” to minimize repetitive scenes, especially when they might diminish screen time dedicated to other aspects of Sharon’s storyline. For instance, some of the recurring arguments between Sharon and Dennis about Alex could be omitted to allocate more focus on the strike story. While Sharon can and should develop a romantic arc, it’s important to avoid making her love life the central focus of an episode, potentially overshadowing essential scenes that highlight her professional life.
