Sharon Horgan to Star In and Exec Produce New HBO Comedy About a Divorcee; Seals New First-Look Deal

Sharon Horgan, the brains behind ‘Bad Sisters’, has signed a two-year contract with HBO that grants them first rights to any future projects she creates. In addition, HBO has given Horgan and her production company Merman an immediate green light for a new comedy series, where she will write, produce, and even act.

According to HBO, the upcoming series – the initial production under the new agreement – will trace the journey of a 50-year-old divorcee as she navigates her quest for intimacy and affection, all while managing the care of her aging parents and her seemingly grown-up son.

The arrangement with writer-producer Sharon Horgan, famous for shows such as “Pulling,” “Catastrophe,” “Motherland,” “Amandaland” (as well as “Bad Sisters”), started earlier this month. Previously, she had been associated with Apple TV+, where “Bad Sisters” recently premiered its second season. This series brought her Emmy nominations for best actress in a drama series and exceptional writing for a drama series, along with BAFTA and Peabody awards.

Returning to HBO, Horgan was previously responsible for creating their TV show “Divorce,” which featured Sarah Jessica Parker and Thomas Haden Church in leading roles.

Amy Gravitt, HBO & Max comedy programming’s executive VP, expressed her joy in being reunited with Sharon. “Her ability to share personal experiences through her characters is what makes us all feel a bit less isolated,” she said. “It’s this quality that sets her comedy apart so uniquely. Moreover, she has an exceptional eye for material and a strong desire to guide others’ stories. We eagerly anticipate the fresh talent she will introduce.

The upcoming series, spearheaded, co-produced, and penned by Horgan, will originate from her production company Merman. Established in 2014, this studio is responsible for the creation of “Bad Sisters”, “Motherland”, and its recent spin-off “Amandaland”, which debuted early in 2025.

I’m thrilled to collaborate with Casey, Amy, Francesca, and the rest of the team at HBO once more, and I’m eager for Merman to carry on spinning tales for a firm that’s nurtured some of the most legendary TV series,” Horgan expressed in a statement.
