Viewers are still reeling from a shocking moment in Paradise Season 2‘s fourth episode, but Shailene Woodley says there’s a surprising beauty behind the unexpected turn of events. Be warned: spoilers follow!
In the fourth episode of the show’s second season, Annie unexpectedly gives birth to a healthy baby girl in an abandoned diner. Sadly, both she and Xavier die shortly after due to blood loss. This is a particularly heartbreaking scene, considering how much time the show dedicated to developing Annie’s character and making viewers connect with her in the very first episode.
I keep reminding myself that flashbacks are a huge part of what makes Paradise, well, Paradise! It all started with President Bradford dying – James Marsden plays him – and honestly, he still shows up in scenes every now and then, which is kinda cool.
Now, Woodley has explained the gut-wrenching twist in Paradise Season 2.
Shailene Woodley calls Annie’s death in Paradise Season 2 “primal and deeply rooted”

Shailene Woodley discussed filming the emotional scene where her character, Annie, dies in the second season’s fourth episode. She told The Hollywood Reporter that because the actress has a medical background, she understood the potential risks associated with childbirth.
Woodley believes Annie found peace in knowing her daughter was healthy and strong enough to build a good life – something Annie herself wasn’t able to do. This acceptance, Woodley suggests, was a deep and natural comfort for her.
Driven by her caring nature, she found peace in continuing to help others until the very end of her life.

Honestly, that scene really got to me, and a huge part of that was the writing. It was just so beautifully and emotionally written that when I first read it, I instantly felt everything my character needed to feel. I gotta give it up to the writers – they’re incredibly talented and really understand people, which made filming the scene so much easier and more natural.
The actress has a general sense of what will happen next on the show Paradise, and she’s been given more insight into Link’s storyline than anyone else. According to her, the creator, Dan Fogelman, shared details about where the story with the baby will go.
