Fantasy is incredibly popular right now, and a well-developed magic system can really make a fantasy show stand out. What used to be a hobby for a small group of people playing games like Dungeons & Dragons or reading obscure comics is now a major part of mainstream entertainment, thanks to hits like Harry Potter and Game of Thrones. But every fantasy world handles magic differently. Some, called “low fantasy,” have very little or no magic, while others, known as “high fantasy,” feature elaborate magical creatures and detailed stories explaining how magic works.
Fantasy stories often explore similar ideas, like fighting against unfair rules, starting revolutions, and completely overturning broken systems. Like fantasy in general, dystopian fiction has become very popular recently, thanks to successful series like The Hunger Games and The Handmaid’s Tale. Whether the story features dragons or oppressive leaders, the most popular ones are often based on bestselling novels. Netflix’s Shadow and Bone follows this trend, but also stands out with its exceptionally well-developed magic system.
Shadow And Bone Seamlessly Blends Teen Dystopia With Immersive Magic
Few Fantasy Series Have Such Meticulous World-Building
As a fantasy fan, I have to say that Netflix’s Shadow and Bone really grabbed me with its unique magic system, the Grisha—it’s the foundation of the whole Grishaverse book series. While it feels fresh, there are definitely echoes of other great fantasy worlds in there, which isn’t a bad thing! The story centers on Alina Starkov, played brilliantly by Jessie Mei Li, who discovers she’s a Sun Summoner—basically, one of the most powerful and rare magic users around. She’s tasked with saving her country from this terrifying place called the Shadow Fold. But it’s not just about her; the Grisha, or ‘Small Science’ as it’s known, is a deeply detailed and well-established system with lots of different practitioners, which makes the world feel incredibly rich.
Similar to the houses at Hogwarts, the Grisha are divided into three main groups, each with different abilities. The Corporalki are at the top – they can heal or harm the human body and are Ravka’s most powerful fighters. Below them are the Etherealki, like Alina, who can summon natural energies like fire and water. The Materialki, often underestimated, can work with solid objects to build, strengthen, or change them. While magic is a core part of the world of Shadow and Bone, not everyone accepts it.
Ravka has a strict social hierarchy that leads to unfair treatment and wastes people’s talents. Like the districts in The Hunger Games which each have a specific purpose, the different types of Grisha magic users are further divided based on their unique abilities. Despite this, Alina quickly proves to be exceptional and must forge her own path to success, much like Katniss does in the arena. But instead of fighting a tyrannical government, Alina’s mission is to restore light to her country, which has been devastated by war, and defeat dangerous monsters.
Shadow And Bone Deserved Just As Much Success As Its Page-To-Screen Contemporaries
The Netflix Adaptation Was Struck Down Before It Could Reach Its Peak
Although Shadow and Bone drew inspiration from popular series like Harry Potter and The Hunger Games, it didn’t achieve the same level of success. While Harry Potter is getting a new TV series on HBO and another Hunger Games movie is on the way, Shadow and Bone was unfortunately canceled by Netflix after just two seasons, leaving fans with unresolved plotlines and a frustrating cliffhanger. The cancellation is particularly disappointing because the show clearly had a lot of promise.
Before Netflix cancelled the show completely, a spinoff series following the popular characters from Six of Crows was in the works. There was also plenty more story material within the Grishaverse to continue the fantasy series. However, adapting books for television is often challenging, and even well-made shows frequently end prematurely. Despite this, Shadow and Bone’s creative magic system and clever observations about society make it a worthwhile watch for anyone who enjoys fantasy, dystopian stories, or simply a good time.
