As a film enthusiast with a penchant for observing the intricacies of character arcs, I must say that Reneé Rapp’s departure from “The Sex Lives of College Girls” as Leighton Murray is a bittersweet moment. While it’s always heartbreaking to see beloved characters leave, it’s equally exciting to witness their growth and pursuit of dreams.
⚠️ Caution: The following narrative discloses plot points from the initial two episodes of Season 3 of “The Sex Lives of College Girls,” currently available for viewing on Max.
Fare thee well, Leighton Murray.
As a movie enthusiast, I’ve been eagerly awaiting updates about “The Sex Lives of College Girls,” and the recent announcement that Reneé Rapp would be leaving the show in Season 3 has certainly piqued my curiosity. Now, the creators have unveiled the intriguing details of how Leighton Murray, the über-rich legacy student, will bid farewell to Essex College. I can hardly wait!
In the opening episode of Season 3, Leighton learns that the advanced math class she was scheduled to attend has been canceled because not enough students enrolled. Her math teacher suggests she commute to a neighboring college instead. However, an unpleasant encounter with someone on public transportation makes Leighton question her future path. Additionally, her partner, Alicia (Midori Francis), announces she’s leaving school to work for the mayor of Boston.
With more reasons stacking up, Leighton chooses the challenging path to move to the esteemed Massachusetts Institute of Technology for her academic journey. At first, she keeps this decision hidden from her cherished suite-mates Whitney (Alyah Chanelle Scott), Kimberly (Pauline Chalamet) and Bela (Amrit Kaur). Eventually, they learn about it through a secondary source – their former suite-mate Jocelyn (Lauren Spencer) – and later confront Leighton, who expresses regret for not disclosing the news earlier.
After resolving their differences, they naturally opted to bid farewell to Leighton in a traditional university style (which meant throwing a party!).
Justin Noble stated in an interview with EbMaster that Leighton Murray has never experienced defeat or loss throughout her life. Therefore, the sole reason she might depart is if such a move can be undeniably considered as a victory for herself.
Since the debut of the show in November 2021, Rapp’s musical journey has flourished. In a chat with EbMaster, she expressed that her ultimate aspiration has always been a career in music.
She expressed, “Initially, I planned to pursue music as a secondary venture, you know, juggling tasks here and there.” She continued, “However, it’s turned out that acting has been sustaining my music career. Acting was essentially my strategy to gain recognition.
