Severance Season 2 Finale: What Dark Secrets Do the Goats Hold for Season 3?

In the tenth episode of Severance Season 2, the nurturing mammals known as humans and their cherished livestock, goats, make a triumphant return. This installment offers further insights into the function of the department, yet leaves one significant enigma for Season 3 to resolve.

Since Severance Season 1 Episode 5, the enigma surrounding the goats has persisted. In their quest for explanations, Helly and Mark ventured onto the severed floor, where they unexpectedly encountered a caretaker in a suit tending to a newborn goat while being surrounded by a group of kids.

In the second season of the Apple TV+ show, the goats have matured, and it’s revealed that the department is called “Mammalians Nurturance” and is led by a passionate figurehead – Gwendoline Christie as Lorne.

As a gamer diving into the enigma that is Severance, I’ve heard plenty of theories about their role – from ‘the goats are part of the elusive Board’ to ‘they’re used for cloning projects’. But let me tell you, the Season 2 finale finally offers some tantalizing insights on this… Proceed with caution: spoilers lie ahead!

Severance’s goat mystery takes a dark turn in Season 2 finale

In the final episode of Season 2, Lorne takes one of the goats to Drummond for a ritual sacrifice. The purpose of this sacrifice is to accompany a valued woman named Gemma (whose spirit will be guided) on her journey towards Kier’s location. This essentially implies that the goat’s role is to guide or lead the spirit of Gemma to where Kier is.

Prior to picking up and arming himself, Drummond inquired about the goat’s vitality (energy and zest) and slyness (clever tactics), to which Lorne responded, “It has a good share of these traits among its group.

Then, Drummond requests, ‘Please show it to me alive,'” as Gemma moves towards Cold Harbor, the scene progressing.

Afterward, he places the goat inside a white container adorned with depictions that resemble cave paintings typically used in sacrifices – one image displays a figure kneeling before a goat, while another shows a person on the opposite side, apparently symbolizing Kier (as they’re shown opening a door).

In another scene, a goat lies deceased, stomach upward, under the radiant beams of sunlight. “To Kier, we entrust this creature, and his perpetual battle against suffering,” declares Drummond.

Lorne receives the gun from him, but she seems uncertain. She queries, “How many more ammunition do I need to distribute?” To this, Drummond responds, “As many as our leader commands.

Fortunately, the action was halted before she could fire the gunshot. Meanwhile, Mark was out searching for Gemma. Prior to dealing a fatal blow, Drummond attacked Mark severely; however, Lorne intervened at the last moment and rescued him from certain danger.

She points a firearm at Drummond’s temple, and declares, “There will be no further bloodshed.” It’s evident that numerous goats have been slaughtered in the name of Kier, yet the reason behind it remains unclear.

Mentioning an “offering” implies a somber, ceremonial aspect to Lumon’s activities, making it seem as if the organization operates more like a secretive cult than a typical business entity.

However, what’s the reason for Gemma’s ghost being accompanied by a goat as her guide? And why does Drummond refer to Kier’s door as if it were a genuine location rather than just another fabrication from Lumon Corporation?

Previously, Severance appeared to subtly suggest spiritual themes, but the recent disclosure suggests that Lumon’s real aim might be connected to something deeply mystical or even otherworldly – a possibility that now seems increasingly plausible.

In various historical instances, animals were slaughtered as offerings to deities to secure blessings or access to the spiritual realm. Could Lumon be pushing this ancient custom to an alarming level? Perhaps the goat’s corpse holds practical significance in facilitating a person’s separation from their former self.

The reason behind its existence continues to be one of the intriguing enigmas surrounding Severance, an answer we might uncover as we eagerly await the possible arrival of Season 3.
