In Episode 10 of Severance Season 2, we have the finale, brimming with intrigue! Mark’s choice to remain with Helly at Lumon, Gemma’s daring escape, and the enigmatic goat scene – there’s much to explore. Let’s delve into the details of the ending together! Here’s a comprehensive analysis for you.
Last week’s almost-final episode of Severance had me hooked! As I was figuring out a way to reach the Exports Hall, Helly crossed my path in the MDR office area. Dylan’s inner self attempted to quit after Gretchen refused his proposal. Burt shipped Irving quite a distance from Kier, and it remains uncertain if or when he’ll return.
As Cold Harbor remained unfinished, Devon and Harmony Cobel escorted me, their trusted companion, to the Damona Birthing Retreat. Just before time ran out, they jolted my Innie awake, urgently asking for the last words I spoke when I was in the world outside. “She’s alive,” I recalled.
The Severance Season 2 finale kicks off right there, and it’s quite the ride! Brace yourselves as we delve in together.
The Severance Season 2 finale opens with a big Jame confession
As I’m engrossed in my game, Cobel pops up, querying if I’ve wrapped up Cold Harbor. After a quick round of location clarification and figuring out why she’s here, I inform her that I haven’t completed it yet. That implies Ms. Casey, or Gemma as Devon reminds us, is still breathing, offering an opportunity for rescue. She shares some intel about the Exports Hall, but seeing as Irving had sketched it out for me earlier, I’m already in the loop.
At Lumon, I found myself face-to-face with Helly. “Your speech at the party had quite an amusing twist,” I remarked, as she subtly picked up a pen off her desk. “I must admit, I was rather peeved with you following that. In a fit of anger, I tossed a tin of candies.
Helly says what we’re all thinking: “God, you’re f**king weird.”
“He gradually moves closer to her.” “He admits that he doesn’t love his daughter,” he says. “I once saw a reflection of Kier in her, but he faded as she grew… I fathered others in secret, but he wasn’t there either. It was only when I saw him again… in you.
In a menacing manner, Helly prevents him from approaching any further. “It was your family who crafted the inferno, and you’ll be the one to suffer in it,” she warns him, brandishing her pen as if it were a blade… yet she doesn’t attack, and he remains unperturbed. “Ah, there you are,” he responds, almost seeming pleased. “Tomorrow marks a significant event,” he notes, then departs, leaving Helly feeling bewildered, exasperated, and puzzled.
Mark raises a big question about the fate of the Innies
Cobel clarifies: “After finishing that document, promptly make your way to the dark corridor, followed by descending to the Testing Floor. You won’t be allowed to exit MDR until that file has been fully processed.
As Mark approaches the Testing Floor, he’ll lose his Innie identity. Cobel explains, “Your chip is programmed to your specific floor. When you reach testing, you’ll transform back into your Outie self.
Essentially, External Mark (Outie Mark) saves Gemma, takes her to an elevator leading to a disconnected level, and afterwards, Internal Mark (Innie Mark) directs her towards the emergency staircase to exit. In other words, it should be straightforward!
Mark appears noticeably worried. “If we manage to show she’s still alive and prove they’ve taken her against her will,” Devon urges him, asking for his agreement to assist them.
He queries, his voice quivering slightly due to Devon’s anxious reaction, “If Lumon were to cease, what would become of each Innie on the lower floors?” His question hangs heavy, implying a significant sacrifice: “Are you asking me to risk my life, the lives of all below, just for one person you happen to hold dear?
Mark’s Innie meets his Outie
According to Cobel, rescuing Gemma doesn’t automatically guarantee that he will continue living. He hands him a camera and requests him to hit the play button. “Take a look at it, record your reaction, then go outside,” Cobel instructs.
Not long after, Mark’s Inner self views the recording – this is a clever method for his Outer self to communicate. “I suppose you already know who I am,” his Outer self says, causing his Inner self to smile (it must be quite unusual to hear yourself and not recognize it as yourself).
Allow me to clarify our request, but first, let me express my deepest apologies. When I designed you, I intended both your confinement and freedom. Unfortunately, I was led to believe by Lumon that you’d be content, so for the past two years, you’ve been experiencing a living nightmare instead.
What they did to you is terrible, and one of the reasons I’m here is to set things right. I hope, considering our shared background, that you’ll allow me to try.
Mark’s Innie and Outie negotiate (and argue)
In this scenario, Mark’s external consciousness (Outie) listens to his internal consciousness (Innie) for the first time, and Innie delivers a message. “I never thought I’d have the chance to talk to you directly, not to mention receive an apology, so I appreciate it,” Innie communicates.
To be honest, ‘nightmare’ isn’t quite the right term. We manage to make things work, to find a sense of completeness, which is why your request gives me pause… no matter what this life might be, it’s all we know, and we don’t wish for it to end. I hope you can empathize with that sentiment.
So begins a back and forth between Mark’s two halves that starts amicably… but it becomes heated.
In your shoes, I’d echo the same sentiments… Although Lumon might hold significant importance in your life right now, it doesn’t have to be everything. Recently, you might have been experiencing glimpses of another realm, hints from my world. Similarly, I’ve caught a glimpse of yours. This phenomenon is known as reintegration, a process that allows us to merge our memories and effectively become one entity again.
I’ve embarked on this journey because I realize how unjust the current situation is for you. Once your release is secured, I promise to complete what we’ve started together. Our lives are shared, and I want us to continue experiencing it side by side.
Mark’s Internal self seeks understanding about what this would entail. “Is it like a hierarchical arrangement?” he queries. “It encompasses us as a whole… one entity sharing both our memories, experiences, traumas, and positive aspects,” his External counterpart explains.
Given that you’ve lived twice as long as the new hybrid person, it appears as though they would resemble you more than me,” his Inner Self contends, inquiring about the details of this process.
Mark’s Outer self pauses and speaks frankly to his Inner self. “I grieved for Gemma for two whole years. I ended up losing my teaching job due to my frequent intoxication. You understand, I kept all of her belongings in the basement, as it seemed simpler to pretend she never existed, and I thought I was sparing you from experiencing that kind of pain,” he confides.
Later, he irritates Innie by mistakenly calling Helly “Heleny” and joking about their relationship. It becomes evident that he prefers to be with Helly as he states, “I need my wife back, I must have her,” but in reality, these words only reinforce his unwillingness to relinquish his life with Helly.
She’s the one I adore, and if you’d cared about my life before tonight, you’d know this. She’s the one I stand to lose if I follow your advice, because we both understand that her Outie may never return, given the doubts surrounding its existence… and given the possibility that everything you tell me might be untrue.” (The Innie is speaking here.)
Mark’s projection, the Outie, vows not to abandon… himself, but his Internal (Innie) remains unconvinced. “I believe you’ll promptly forget about me once you reunite with your wife,” he expresses, “and I fear that I vanish each time an Innie appears below.” This shows he can no longer trust him.
Cobel reveals the truth of MDR
When Mark’s Outie becomes agitated, Cobel suggests she can talk to his Innie. She clarifies, “The numbers you see are connected to your wife. Specifically, the MDR numbers from your console. They serve as a passageway into the mind of your Outie’s spouse, Gemma Scout.
Cobel wonders what emotions correspond to the numbers he observes. Interestingly, these feelings align with the Four Humors: Sorrow, Anger, Joy, and Fear – which, as it turns out, are the fundamental aspects shaping her mind.
He wonders aloud, “What exactly are we creating here?” She discloses, “Every file you’ve finished is essentially a new form of consciousness for her. Each one is a new entity, which we call an ‘Innie’,” she explains. As it turns out, Mark has completed 24 files, and Cold Harbor is the final one.
Tomorrow marks your last day with us at Lumon, Cobel informs you. Your role here has been fulfilled, as will hers.
In my perspective as a fan, Mark wonders why Cobel is sharing all this information with him. She warns me that things won’t end happily between me and Helly R., for she’s an Eagan, they don’t value me, I mean nothing to them or her. They are merely using me, and when they’ve done using me, they’ll toss me aside like a discarded shell. She suggests Reintegration as my only viable option, but in anger, I leave the scene.
He warns him that if the next thing he encounters isn’t the missing floor, he vows to take away his wife.
Mark’s final day at Lumon begins
A few seconds pass, and Mark’s Innie emerges from the elevator on the damaged floor, and there’s an eerie shift: instead of the painting titled “Kier Pardons His Betrayers,” it now depicts Mark seated at his desk within Woe’s Hollow, surrounded by all the characters we’ve encountered in Severance thus far (it’s intriguing to note that Helena is positioned among the various Kiers at the top, implying that Mark finishing Cold Harbor might trigger the “revolving” situation Jame mentioned).
Helly exits the elevator, and they exchange a reassuring hug. “There’s something I need to share with you,” he confides. “The same goes for me,” she responds.
As they traverse the dimly illuminated passageways, a stark contrast to the harsh, blinding light they left behind, they eventually reach the MDR area. In the center of this space stands a towering statue of Kier Eagan, who clutches a missive intended for Mark.
Mark, as the Founder, I’d love to see the historic finish of your 25th file. Helly R. will join me in witnessing this event. Glorious triumph brings great rewards. Enjoy the surprise within your card – a waffle treat! Sincerely, Mr Milchick.
A short distance off, Mark’s computer begins to hum, and both of them settle down. Helly confides in Mark about her encounter with Jamie, who spoke enigmatically about the flame of Kier residing within her, and that this day holds particular significance.
“I know why,” Mark says. “I know why they’re doing this.”
At the elevator, Milchick encounters Dylan upon his arrival at work. “Did he say no?” Dylan queries, and Milchick motions for him to come along. Additionally, we notice that the painting has been titled: “The Triumphant Elevation of Cold Harbor.
Gemma starts her final day at Lumon as reality sinks in for Mark
On the Testing Floor, as the last day arrived, Gemma reached for her wardrobe. The same jacket and scarf from the day she thought she had perished lay there, instantly recognizable. Curious, Gemma inquired about the situation with her nurse, but was instructed to get dressed, assured that all would be well.
Helly wonders, ‘What’s going to occur when they take out the chip?’ Mark doesn’t respond directly, but his silence implies it could be harmful for her. Mark ponders that he might choose not to proceed, thereby putting Gemma in danger and saving himself. However, Helly points out that if Cobel is truthful, our situation is dire regardless of the decision made.
If you manage to extract her, it might bring down Lumon, as his sister suggested,” she continues. “Perhaps you could accomplish this by using the combined approach.
Mark implies that his Outie might be deceitful. “But what if it isn’t?” questions Helly. “At the very least, you’ll still get a chance to survive.
Indeed, I’d love to live with you,” Mark expresses (and trust me, it gets more emotional later on). “However, I am her,” she counters. A solitary tear trickles down Mark’s right cheek, and he chooses to wrap up the document.
Dylan’s Outie responds to his resignation request
Underneath them, Doctors Mauer and Drummond watch as Mark begins working at Cold Harbor. Simultaneously, Milchick guides Dylan through the consequences of his resignation request, giving him space to avoid any potentially awkward or emotional reactions.
“Dear Innie, I’ve read your request and organized my response into three points,” the form reads.
Point one: Allow me to express my displeasure strongly. Gretchen is my cherished spouse, and your behavior towards her was highly inappropriate and offensive.
Point two: I understand. She’s indeed remarkable, and considering our similar physical traits, it makes sense for you to concur. However, here’s the catch: I’ve never been particularly impressive, so when Gretch mentioned that you are this self-confident powerhouse… Well, it felt a bit uncomfortable, somehow.
To put it simply, point three is expressing my hope that one day she might see in me the qualities she admires in you. To be candid, I enjoy having you around and if we’re being honest, I’d prefer it if you stayed. However, if you feel the need to go, by all means, do so – but I believe our connection is valuable enough for you to stick around. Warmest regards, Your Outie.
Mark finishes Cold Harbor
At Cold Harbor, as Mark nears the 99%, Helly struggles to recall location names – even something as vast as the Equator. “Is that a structure?” Mark queries, and Helly replies playfully, “Or perhaps an entire continent.
Helly whispers softly as Mark focuses on his last group of data points, ‘If only we had a bit more time.’ She hands him directions to the Export Hall, and he swiftly completes the document.
initially, the office plunges into darkness… but then, pockets of green light appear from a corner and a spotlight shines on the statue of Kier as ‘Sirius’, accompanied by the tune of The Alan Parsons Project’s song. “Mark S,” the statue speaks, “by finishing your 25th Macrodata file, you have moved my grand plan closer to completion, thereby making you one of the most significant individuals in history.
Now, enjoy the outcome of your hard work and greet your earthly supervisor, your personal floor manager,” the voice echoes, as Milchick bounds into the room and takes center stage.
In a playful manner, Kier jokes that the core principle of Vision keeps him from commenting on Milchick’s good looks. Later, Milchick praises Kier as both wise and generous, to which Kier responds, “You certainly know many words! It’s fortunate you didn’t write the first appendix; it would have exploded with all those words.
Milchick says, “It’s a pleasure to respond to your remarks, Mr. Eagan. The impact you’ve made is undeniably greater than life itself.” Kier questions, “Do you mean my business?” To which Milchick responds, “No, I’m referring to this statue that stands five inches taller than you actually did.
A noticeable, uncomfortable quietness settles in. The state then acknowledges, “Thank you for your feedback… Seth,” paving the way for Milchick to present Choreography and Merriment.
Season 2 gets its own dance party as Mark tries to find Gemma
While Gemma moves towards the Cold Harbor room along the corridor, Milchick leads a parade band within the MDR office, and Jame enters his personal workspace. “The effectiveness test is about to start,” Dr. Mauer informs him.
As I continue the next tune, ‘The Ballad of Ambrose and Gunnel’, Mark makes his escape towards the Export Hall. With a friendly farewell, “See you at the Equator,” we exchange, and in a clever ploy to distract Mark, Helly grabs Milchick’s walkie-talkie.
As Mark sprints through the hallways, Helly confines Milchick inside the restroom, and Dylan assists her by positioning a vending machine to barricade the entrance.
The dark truth of Cold Harbor is revealed
At last, Gemma steps into the Cold Harbor chamber. The space within is sparsely furnished, only a cradle – the identical one Mark had purchased prior to her miscarriage (hence it was labeled “col d’Arbor” on its packaging). “Enter the room,” Dr. Mauer instructs as Jame observes via his screen.
In a curious turn of events, I find myself inquiring, “Who are you?” This question echoes through the air, answered by Gemma with a humble, “I’m not sure.” As I move closer to the crib, my heart pounding with anticipation, her next words resonate, “Dr. Mauer has asked me to disassemble it.” With a trembling hand, she begins the task, and I watch on, filled with a mix of unease and fascination as each piece is carefully removed.
The barricade stands firm, and she feels utterly moved… it’s enchanting,” Dr Mauer remarks, with Billie Holiday’s ‘I’ll Be Seeing You’ playing softly in the background.
Mammalians Nurturable offers a sacrifice
Meanwhile, somewhere else, Mr. Drummond steps out of an elevator situated in the Export Room on a lower level, as Lorne, the goat caretaker from Mammalian Custodians, navigates the hallway pushing a cart with a young goat inside.
Nurturable, a mammalian gift,” she shares with Mr. Drummond. “Is there spark in it?” he wonders. “Indeed, there is,” she replies. “Cunningness?” he queries. “Most certainly, among its kind,” she affirms as the goat bleats softly.
This animal will be buried with a beloved woman whom it must lead to Kier’s house. Can it handle this responsibility?” he queries, and Lorne assures us that it can (the reason Gwendoline Christie didn’t stroke the goat remains a mystery).
Mr. Drummond readies the bolt pistol and requests Lorne to hand it over, saying, “Let’s use this… We are entrusting this creature into Kier’s care as he continues his everlasting battle against suffering.
In a simplified manner, Lorne points the gun at the goat and queries, “How much more do I need to hand over? How many more times?” Drummond replies, “As many as the original creator demands.
Mark kills Mr Drummond (by accident)
Before Lorne could take aim at the goat, Mr. Drummond was interrupted by Mark pounding on the elevator door nearby. In a flash, he pushed Mark hard against the wall and struck him in the face. He then tossed him aside like a limp doll, attempting to choke him. However, Mark managed to bite him and break free. Despite this, Mr. Drummond regained control and began to strangle him once more.
In a turn of events, Lorne steps outside, puts the revolver against her own head, and declares, “No more violence,” triggering a struggle. Eventually, Lorne overpowers Mr. Drummond, sending him crashing to the floor, while Mark resorts to using his tie as a makeshift strangling tool. However, when Lorne reaches for the gun, Mark implores her not to take his life.
Mark points a firearm at the back of Mr. Drummond’s head while they stroll through the Export Hall. “Emile appreciates your kindness,” Lorne says to him.
Descending to the Testing Floor, I find myself transitioning into my Innie persona. In this strange overlap, I unintentionally pull the trigger, resulting in a gruesome demise for Mr. Drummond, choking on his own blood. His limp body tumbles out as the elevator doors part – at least I’ve reached the right place under these unfortunate circumstances.
Mark finally finds Gemma
Here it is, everyone! The moment we’ve all been anticipating since Season 1, Episode 7, when we learned that Ms. Casey was in fact married to Mark’s Innie – this is the episode where Mark locates Gemma at last.
Initially, Helly requests assistance from the Choreography and Merriment team to ensure Milchick remains confined in the bathroom. “They aim to eliminate our entire department,” she warns. “If he escapes, it’s game over for us. They might shut us down like disposable tools. I’ve witnessed it happen, and I know you’ve lost colleagues too… and you could be the next victim.
“They give us half a life and think we won’t fight for it… right, Milchick? Please help us.”
In this rephrased version, let’s maintain a conversational tone while making it more suitable for general audiences: Mark locates Cold Harbor’s room, only to encounter the nurse from the Testing Floor. “Get lost,” she says to him, but she retreats quickly once he shouts back at her with his bolt pistol.
Since every door on the Testing Floor requires a finger prick for access, he resorts to using his tie, which unluckily happened to be saturated with Mr. Drummond’s blood, as a disguise to fool the sensor.
In a functional state, Mark enters cautiously to locate Gemma. Unaware of his identity, he successfully persuades her to exit the room. Upon seeing this, Jamie expresses surprise or shock, exclaiming “Oh my!” or something similar.
Her memories rush back in an instant. Mark and Gemma are back together again!
How does Severance Season 2 end?
In the final episode of Severance Season 2, Gemma manages to break free from Lumon, while Mark’s inner self (Innie) decides to stay with Helly instead of leaving.
In hot pursuit by Dr. Mauer, I sprint alongside Gemma through the labyrinthine hallways, our hearts pounding with adrenaline. We manage to reach the elevator just in time, and as its doors seal shut behind us, he bellows, “You’ll extinguish them all!
Is it possible that what he’s suggesting is that Gemma’s separate consciousnesses might disappear altogether, or could it be that a greater danger arises if Gemma leaves the Testing Floor? The first option appears to be the most plausible, but with Severance, anything can happen.
As the elevator ascends to the disconnected level, they share a kiss – that is, until Mark changes to his Innie persona… and Gemma transforms into Ms. Casey. “What’s going on?” she inquires, but Mark remains attentive and leads her towards the emergency stairway instead.
Simultaneously, Milchick exits the restroom, yet it’s already too late for him, and he finds himself facing a larger group. “You can take your anger out on Mr. Milchick,” Dylan retorts, flanked by the Choreography and Merriment team members.
At the stairwell leading out, Mark informs Ms. Casey that she should depart. She hesitantly exits, but Mark’s inner self remains inside. Later down the hallway, Helly emerges, and as Gemma cries out, pounds on the window, and pleads with him to step outside, he instead departs, taking Helly’s hand with him.
They dash hand-in-hand down the corridors illuminated by flashing red lights; grinning nervously, they face an ominous and unpredictable future. And with that, the episode concludes, leaving us hanging on the edge of our seats, wondering what comes next. Indeed, it’s a classic cliffhanger!
