Seth Meyers’s Cavalcade of SNL Writers Won Late Night

Instead of saying “Okay, not a week in late night, more of a fortnight,” you could also say “Let’s make that a bit longer than a week, so around two weeks.”

Last week, the CBS late-night shows took a break, but NBCUniversal shows featured all the main cast members of Saturday Night Live promoting their 50th anniversary special. This past week, there were no NBC shows or Kimmel, but Last Week Tonight and Have I Got News for You made their comeback. As you can imagine, we had a lot to discuss about it.

Kicking off our rundown of the last fortnight’s highlights, I’d like to give a shout-out to John Oliver, who graced The Late Show With Stephen Colbert an impressive 20 times! During their latest encounter, both seemed to be in high spirits as they tackled one of the most distressing events in recent American history. When Stephen mentioned that people tune into Last Week Tonight to unwind, John’s response was priceless: “That’s like self-inflicting wounds to relax!” This interaction inspired me to dedicate a section to some of the more unusual statements made on late-night shows during these past two weeks.

➽ “I aimed to educate myself on the technique of using marijuana.”

➽ “The fur is shedding from the orbs.”

➽ “This entire week has been underwritten by poor imitations of Lorne.”

➽ “My ambition is to reestablish smoking as trendy.

Now to the ranking.

After Midnight Butches Up a Hair Salon

I’m interested in attending an energetic discussion led by Monét X Change, Josh Sharp, and Aaron Jackson from “Dicks: The Musical” about redefining masculinity in hair salons. Their spirited banter, as seen in “Drag Race“, is not to be missed! My personal highlight was when Aaron Jackson exclaimed, “Wild dogs are loose in the salon! Don’t look at them, don’t look at them!” I must add that it could have been even more entertaining if it were twice as long and five times louder. Repeatedly amping up the volume would have made it truly unforgettable.

David Letterman Kinda Sorta Hosts The Tonight Show

During the celebrations for SNL50, Paul Shaffer joined The Tonight Show band. Interestingly, Shaffer is the only individual to have roles in all three NBC movies about comedy: Saturday Night, A Futile and Stupid Gesture, and The Late Shift. Isn’t it ironic that Shaffer became the bandleader on The Tonight Show while Letterman never got to host? Dave Letterman, with his youthful crankiness, often brings excitement, and Fallon is a great host. It seems that a popular TikTok trend involves Jimmy Fallon getting hit with tortillas repeatedly, but it’s amusing to see Letterman still performing with the same zest from his younger days.

Lizzy Caplan Talks Hole

I often stay up late watching talk shows. It’s not just for fun, but a legal requirement. Rarely do guests on these shows manage to surprise me with an interesting story, but Lizzy Caplan did exactly that last week on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”. Her anecdote about finding a new waxer was hilarious, filled with cheeky references to Robert De Niro’s Brazilian and a brilliant punchline regarding her opening act.

The Ladies of SNL Embody the Ladies of SLC

This Clubhouse Playhouse is a timeless spectacle. The legendary females from Saturday Night Live – Laraine Newman, Rachel Dratch, Cheri Oteri, Ana Gasteyer, and Cecily Strong – recreating the Sprinter van fight from Real Housewives of Salt Lake City’s fifth season is nothing short of astonishing. Their dedication, their passion, and the multitude of women shouting with partially clear words are truly captivating. While Gasteyer delivers a standout performance, it’s Oteri who accidentally lets fly an F-bomb on live television.

A Hero’s Welcome for SNL’s Writers

On Seth Meyers’ Late Night talk show, there was an assembly of writers from Saturday Night Live in anticipation of the anniversary special. Harper Steele boasted about showing a real joint on air when it was still illegal. Emily Spivey shared memories of Mick Jagger’s exposed bottom. James Anderson performed his “Gator World” song with Meyers, many years after the sketch failed during dress rehearsal. For comedy enthusiasts, these writers were like rare Pokémon, and it was an absolute joy to meet them all. However, the act that had me in stitches was Paula Pell demonstrating her vibrator and discussing letting her cat out in a bakery while completely exhausted from working all night. Kudos to Seth Meyers for inviting these individuals onto the show, and major appreciation to the props team for procuring a fake memoir and a discreet Magic Bullet for Pell.
