As someone who has spent decades watching politics unfold, I must say that the latest appointments by President-elect Trump are nothing short of baffling and slightly amusing, albeit with a touch of apprehension. The idea of Elon Musk, a billionaire with Defense Department contracts and foreign ties, leading a “Department of Government Efficiency” is as ludicrously corrupt as it sounds. It’s akin to asking the fox to guard the henhouse.
On his “Closer Look” show airing on Wednesday evening, Seth Meyers voiced his thoughts regarding President-elect Donald Trump’s selections for various crucial positions within his Cabinet, such as Pete Hegseth – a Fox News presenter and Army National Guard alumnus – being put forward to head the Department of Defense.
As Biden tries to find ways to work with Trump, Trump seems determined to dismantle everything that Biden has achieved. For instance, Trump is assembling what could be called his ‘Pandora’s box’ of odd characters and questionable individuals for his cabinet. According to the late-night show host, Trump plans to unleash them on the government much like a group of hyperactive ferrets on a dose of ketamine.
Trump declared on Tuesday that Elon Musk, the affluent innovator behind Tesla, SpaceX, and recently rebranded Twitter (now X), will head the “Department of Streamlined Government” (DSG) alongside Vivek Ramaswamy, a previous Republican primary contender. The president-elect stated in a release that these two exceptional Americans will forge a path for my Administration to eliminate government red tape, reduce unnecessary regulations, curtail extravagant spending, and reorganize Federal Agencies.
Meyers stated that Elon Musk, who is currently the wealthiest individual globally, holds Defense Department contracts and maintains ties with foreign governments. These businesses are subject to federal regulation. He’s now essentially sharing the presidential role, which Meyers finds alarmingly corrupt.
Meyers also discussed Hegseth, Trump’s potential pick for defense secretary. “Indeed, a Fox News host could lead the Defense Department. It seems odd, but apparently it was between him and a general,” he quipped, alluding to the symbol of General Insurance.
The late-night host expressed enthusiasm in a somewhat playful manner: “I must say, this is truly impressive! Not just good, but outstanding! Let’s definitely move forward with it,” he quipped sarcastically. He then proposed some amusing suggestions for key government positions: “That’s what the voters are asking for, right? How about Lionel Hutz as Attorney General? Dr. [Jonathan] Zizmor for Health Secretary. And the guy from ‘Cash Cab’ for Transportation Secretary?
In conclusion to the “Closer Look” section, Meyers expressed, “It’s evident from these appointments that Trump won’t be held back during his second term.
