Documentary series DocuBay will debut “Dupatta Killer,” a true-crime investigation delving into the sordid tale of Mahanand Naik, known as Goa’s notorious serial murderer.
The documentary, available to stream starting March 21, explores the troubling tale of Naik, who was initially charged with murdering 16 women but ended up being convicted for just one. His method was deceptive: he would entice his victims with fake marriage proposals and then choke them using their own scarves.
In his documentary, Director Patrick Graham seeks to delve into the psychological aspects of Naik’s criminal actions as well as the systemic flaws that enabled him to elude justice for a prolonged period. The film integrates survivor accounts and professional perspectives, primarily focusing on how Naik exploited societal pressures related to marriage by preying upon vulnerable women from disadvantaged communities.
Graham found it quite demanding to oversee this documentary’s production due to the delicate subjects it addressed and the need to portray a complicated narrative delicately. However, our goal was not just to retell a story already known, but to offer a fresh angle, exploring aspects beyond the crime to shed light on the underlying systemic flaws that allowed such events to occur.
The film likewise delves into modern discussions concerning fairness, given that Naik’s possible freedom following 15 years behind bars ignites a discussion about reformation and responsibility.
Aditya Pittie, head of IN10 Media Network which owns DocuBay, described the documentary as a strong reminder of the urgent problems within our justice system and how crime can have lasting impacts on society.
Samar Khan, as the CEO of Juggernaut Productions, pointed out the importance of our current project. He stated, ‘Although fictional tales are frequently in vogue, we understand that non-fiction narratives, especially documentaries, possess an extraordinary power to effect significant social change.’
DocuBay, based out of Mumbai, primarily focuses on broadcasting international documentaries worldwide. It can be accessed in approximately 170 countries through various devices such as Apple TV, Fire TV, Roku, and Samsung TVs.
