Sentry’s MCU Debut: How One Avenger’s Death Changed Everything!

It seems that Sentry’s debut in the MCU might have been significantly impacted by the death of a prominent Avengers character within the franchise. Although the original Avengers made their screen debut as far back as 2012, there have been numerous changes over the past decade, not just for the team but also for the entire MCU. The Avengers have welcomed new members, bid farewell to some old ones, and disbanded and reunited multiple times, which is quite fitting given their role in shaping the MCU timeline most directly.

Due to most of the original Avengers being inactive or deceased in the current Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the stage has been set for changes in the franchise‘s dynamics. These shifts have been effectively implemented in recent productions, such as the introduction of the Sentry, a character who fits perfectly due to his timely arrival and the characters who were no longer part of the MCU by 2025.

Sentry’s MCU Debut Hinges Around How Extremely Powerful The Character Is

It’s no wonder that, when given the opportunity, the MCU seized the moment to introduce a character as formidable as Sentry and fully exploited the concept. In Thunderbolts*, Sentry’s debut brilliantly demonstrates his immense strength without requiring him to reach full potential. He effortlessly eliminates the entire main cast in a battle, appearing to utilize only a tiny fraction of his true powers. This portrayal effectively highlights the dire straits the team finds itself in if they are to physically overpower Sentry to save the day.

The incorporation of the Void character underscores the immense power of Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Sentry. As a counterpart to Sentry, the Void possesses an extraordinary ability to generate a horrific pocket dimension and forcefully transport individuals there. This power is indeed formidable. Yet, the portrayal of Sentry in this film is particularly effective due to its strategic timing within the MCU narrative and the presence of active characters in the current universe.

Sentry’s MCU Debut Being After Scarlet Witch’s Doctor Strange 2 Death Arguably Helps It Work

In the storyline of “Thunderbolts”, we find ourselves at a stage where the new version of the Avengers team is barely getting off the ground. This is because, following the events of “Avengers: Endgame”, the team seems to be in a state of inactivity. Additionally, Valentina’s statement in the 2025 movie that “the Avengers aren’t coming.” supports this timing. Moreover, it’s a period in the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline where many prominent heroes have either passed away or retired. This includes Iron Man, Black Widow, Scarlet Witch, and even Captain America, who retired during this time.

In the narrative of “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” last year, I, as the Scarlet Witch, chose to give up my life to eliminate the Darkhold, a powerful artifact that had turned me into the movie’s antagonist following its corruption. This self-sacrifice significantly altered the power dynamics within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), particularly considering the impact of “WandaVision” and the Doctor Strange sequel on showcasing my formidable reality-altering abilities. As a result, when the upcoming “Thunderbolts” unfolds in a universe where I’m already deceased, it elevates moments like the unveiling of the Void’s reality-shaping powers, making them even more remarkable since the Scarlet Witch is no longer around.

*Note: Thunderbolts is a Marvel Comics supervillain team that will be adapted into a movie within the MCU.

While it’s not the sole advantage that Wanda’s demise offers during Sentry’s MCU introduction, it significantly simplifies the perception of Sentry as potentially surpassing the Avengers in power. This is because the unpredictable factor – the hero who could challenge Sentry beyond his physical prowess – has been removed from the scene. Wanda, being the most capable opponent for Sentry outside the realm of his powers, was essentially eliminated before she could fully exhibit her abilities with a clear mind, other than to self-sacrifice.

Indeed, Sentry is a character who could potentially step into the void left by Scarlet Witch’s passing within the franchise. Known for his immense power and ability to shift the balance of battles in favor of the heroes, Sentry also poses a significant risk due to his volatile nature both as a character and within the narrative. With Lewis Pullman, who portrayed Bob in the MCU, officially joining the cast for Avengers: Doomsday, it appears that the likelihood of Sentry taking on this role within the larger MCU may happen sooner than expected.

Currently, It’s Hard To Say What Other MCU Heroes Can Compete With Sentry

Although the identities of the members in the upcoming Avengers team won’t be revealed until “Avengers: Doomsday” comes out, it seems that most of the new team might not match up to Sentry’s abilities. Currently, Captain America and Falcon are part of the group, but they don’t appear to hold a candle to Sentry’s power level. In Marvel’s comic history, some main heroes who could potentially rival Sentry include Hulk and Thor, but their stories within the MCU create complications for this competition.

Although Hulk and Thor have successfully matched Sentry in various comic book tales, critics argue that their portrayals in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) are less powerful compared to their comic book versions. This is plausible since the MCU hasn’t incorporated many of their most impressive comic moments or stories into its own storyline yet. Consequently, it appears questionable whether either character could currently defeat Sentry in the MCU, which makes the decision to introduce Sentry after Scarlet Witch’s death more strategic for increasing suspense and anticipation.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Sentry isn’t depicted as invincible by any means, especially with numerous other formidable characters gracing the screens in recent instalments. However, the current state of the MCU adds an intriguing layer to Sentry’s role, raising questions about potential adversaries he might encounter in upcoming films and the chances of any character overcoming such a challenge based on what we learn from _Thundertbolts_.
