As a seasoned cinephile with a penchant for international cinema, I’m thrilled to learn about the acquisition of “Hot Spot” by Focus Features. Agnieszka Smoczyńska, a director whose work never ceases to amaze me, is back with another visually stunning and thematically profound film. Her collaboration with Focus Features after their successful venture with “The Silent Twins” promises a cinematic experience that I can’t wait to immerse myself in.
Focus Features has gained global distribution rights, with exceptions for Poland, Greece, and France, for the upcoming AI-centric near-future thriller “Hot Spot,” directed by Agnieszka Smoczyńska.
The movie, completed filming in Greece on November 22nd, represents director Smoczyńska’s second project with this studio after “The Silent Twins.” (Informal and conversational)
In a world governed by intelligent artificial lifeforms, the story unfolds around a detective who uncovers a secret rebellion with the potential to challenge the digital ruler, all while solving a murder mystery. BAFTA-nominated Noomi Rapace joins forces with Andrzej Konopka and Reika Kirishima in this production, which is based on an original screenplay penned by Robert Bolesto, a regular collaborator of Smoczyńska’s.
The production of this project is being handled by Klaudia Śmieja-Rostworowska from Madants, who has been a longtime partner to Smoczyńska, along with Bogna Szewczyk-Skupień. Other co-producers include Amanda Livanou (Neda Film), Kristina Börjeson (Film i Väst), Lizette Jonjic (Zentropa), Beata Ryczkowska and Filip Bałdyga from Canal+ Polska, and Adam Gudell from Moderator Inwestycje. Executive producers for the project are Gregory Jankilevitsch, Marcin Czernik, and Christos V. Konstantakopulos, with Michelle Momplaisir of Focus Features overseeing it.
As a movie enthusiast, I was thrilled to learn that I had a hand in negotiating the deal for this fantastic film. This collaboration was orchestrated by Focus Features’ senior VP of business affairs, Iddo Arad, along with Przybecki & Partners, on behalf of the producers. Mid March Media, Madants, and New Europe Film Sales played crucial roles as brokers for the film, with Marcin Łuczaj and Jan Naszewski also stepping up as executive producers. The intricate Greek production services were handled by Faliro House. Lastly, the Polish Film Institute and the Hellenic Film & Audiovisual Center – Creative Greece generously co-financed the production of this masterpiece, ensuring its success on the big screen.
Kiska Higgs, head of production and acquisitions at Focus Features, expressed that Agnieszka is a unique visionary whose creations, whether they depict vampire mermaids, silent twins or tech-dominated societies, are not only visually breathtaking but also predict the future. She’s excited to unveil Agnieszka’s newest work to the world.
Smoczyńska stated: “I’m delighted to collaborate with Focus Features. Their outstanding film accomplishments are equaled only by their consistent respect and backing for directors. With ‘Hot Spot,’ I aim to craft a captivating cinematic journey that encapsulates the spirit of our current era, where cutting-edge technology seems like enchantment, and love is entwined with apprehension.
Smoczyńska is managed by UTA, Black Bear, and High Spot; Konopka is associated with Cont-act; Rapace is represented by CAA and Stella Hernström, with Kurt Selling handling the negotiations; Kirishima is handled by Nest Co.
Focus Features’ current slate includes Edward Berger’s “Conclave” with Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci and Isabella Rossellini; Morgan Neville’s Lego-themed Pharrell Williams biopic “Piece by Piece”; Robert Eggers’ “Nosferatu”; Steven Soderbergh’s “Black Bag” starring Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender; Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Bugonia” with Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons; Ronan Day-Lewis’ directorial debut “Anemone” featuring Daniel Day-Lewis; “Song Sung Blue” with Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson; Chloé Zhao’s “Hamnet” starring Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley; and a new “Downton Abbey” instalment.
