Selena Gomez Pitched ‘Only Murders’ Creators for Mabel to Be the Killer: ‘You Never Know’

As a proud supporter of Latinx representation in Hollywood, I am absolutely thrilled by Selena Gomez‘s achievements in the entertainment industry. Her transformation from a beloved pop sensation to a critically acclaimed actress is nothing short of inspiring. The way she effortlessly balances her acting prowess with her producer duties in shows like “Only Murders in the Building” is truly commendable.

In a natural and easy-to-read manner, we could say that Selena Gomez hoped to portray her character Mabel, from the Hulu show “Only Murders in the Building,” as the murderer during one of the seasons in the popular comedy series.

During an interview at the EbMaster Studio, which was sponsored by J.Crew and SharkNinja at the Toronto International Film Festival, Gomez stated, “That idea I suggested is indeed mine.” He added, “I’m not certain it will succeed, but then again, surprises can happen.

This year, Gomez secured her initial Emmy nomination, being recognized as the leading actress in a comedy series, thanks to her performance on the show.

Gomez, together with her fellow actors from “Emilia Pérez”, namely Karla Sofía Gascón, Zoe Saldaña, Édgar Ramírez and Adriana Paz, were present to talk about the Oscar anticipation and widespread praise for the musical they’re in, directed by Jacques Audiard. This production bagged a joint best actress award at Cannes Film Festival.

The actress who plays the lead role in “Only Murders in the Building” has shown her exceptional acting skills and versatility in comedy, collaborating with comedy icons Steve Martin and Martin Short in this humorous whodunit series.

There are only three other Latina actresses who have been nominated in the lead comedy actress category at the Emmys: Rita Moreno, who was up for “9 to 5” back in 1983; America Ferrera, who won in 2007 for “Ugly Betty” and received another nomination in 2008; and Jenna Ortega, who got nominated last year for “Wednesday”.

This year, I made history by becoming the most nominated Latina executive producer in the outstanding comedy series category’s history. Previously, only two other Latinas have been recognized in this prestigious category – Salma Hayek for “Ugly Betty” in 2007 and Marlis Pujol for “The Kominsky Method” on Netflix in both 2020 and 2021. Unfortunately, no Latina woman has ever won as a producer in any of the top series categories, with Celia D. Costas being the only exception for her work on “Angels in America” back in 2004. I’m proud to be part of this groundbreaking group of talented Latinx professionals in television production.

The fourth season of Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” is scheduled to run until Oct. 29.
