As a seasoned gamer who has traversed countless digital landscapes and battled through hordes of pixelated foes, I must admit that the news about SEGA’s live-action Shinobi adaptation leaves me both excited and apprehensive. The series holds a special place in my gaming heart, having grown up with its lightning-fast gameplay and stealthy ninja action.
SEGA, a Japanese video game publisher, is gearing up for another cinematic venture as the worldwide release of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in December 2024 draws near. In an exciting partnership with Universal Pictures, they’re planning to transform the Shinobi gaming series – known for its action-packed hack-and-slash gameplay – into a live-action movie. It remains unclear whether this will be a standalone film or the start of a series. A director and screenwriter have already been selected to work on the project’s script.
Sam Hargrave, director of Extraction and Matchbox, has agreed to take charge for the live-action Shinobi adaptation. This project is being penned by screenwriter Ken Kobayashi who’s adapting the script. The original Shinobi game was launched in 1987 as an arcade title, which later evolved into a series with 13 mainline and spin-off games released over the years. Among these were Alex Kidd in Shinobi World in 1990, while a 14th game was announced at The Game Awards in 2023 without any subsequent updates given so far.

As per a report from Deadline, it’s been announced that Marc Platt and Adam Siegel will produce the Shinobi movie through Marc Platt Productions, with Dmitri M. Johnson from Story Kitchen and Toru Nakahara from SEGA also involved in production. Mike Goldberg and Timothy I. Stevenson have taken on executive producer roles for the film. Ryan Jones, Senior Vice President of Production Development, and Christine Sun, Director of Production Development, will supervise the Shinobi movie’s progress at Universal Pictures.
It seems that we might have to wait a while before receiving updates on the Shinobi movie adaptation, as Hargrave is now focusing on a film project for Mattel based on Matchbox, a well-liked car collecting series, and Kill Them All, which is being produced by Paramount. Notably, this American director gained fame with the Chris Hemsworth-starring Extraction and its sequel, both released on Netflix. These movies became the most-watched Netflix original films within a month of their release, attracting 99 million viewers each.
Excitedly speaking as a fan, I can’t help but feel a surge of anticipation! It seems that SEGA is set to grace our movie screens once more, and by the look of it, it’s going to be a spectacular event with the global release of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 starting from December 20th, 2024. The third installment promises a reunion of familiar faces, as Sonic 3 welcomes back Shadow the Hedgehog, with Keanu Reeves confirmed to lend his voice to this enigmatic character. Who knows who else might make an appearance from the world of Sonic? I can hardly wait!
