As a long-time gamer who grew up with these Sega classics, this news has left me feeling a bit like Sonic caught off guard by Dr. Robotnik – shocked and dismayed! The list of games being delisted feels like a roll call of my childhood favorites. From Jet Set Radio to Golden Axe, these games were the soundtrack of my youth, the backdrop to countless hours of joy and camaraderie.
On December 6th at 11:59 PM Pacific Standard Time (or December 7th at 2:59 AM Eastern Time), Sega plans to withdraw several iconic games from their digital marketplaces. Some of the titles being removed are Jet Set Radio, Golden Axe, Phantasy Star II, and numerous others.
People who have already bought games can carry on playing them, and certain specific games will remain accessible for those with a Nintendo Switch Online subscription post-delisting. Sega didn’t offer any explanation behind the removals nor did they name which individual games would still be playable by Nintendo Switch Online subscribers following the delistings.
Currently, Sega is busy creating fresh installments for five of its iconic series: Jet Set Radio, Shinobi, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, and Crazy Taxi. While details are scarce at the moment, this year Sega announced that the upcoming Crazy Taxi will offer an expansive open world environment and multiplayer aspects. Additionally, Sega recently unveiled plans to develop a brand new Virtua Fighter game.
