Sega Does What Nintendoes, Opens Physical Store

Sega has debuted its first real-world retail outlet, similar to Nintendo’s stores globally. This new Sega store offers unique merchandise, engaging exhibits, and spots for enjoyable photography sessions. Unlike Nintendo, which has multiple locations, the Sega store currently stands alone – nestled within the Bailian ZX shopping mall in central Shanghai, China.

Although the company suggests potential growth, they’re only planning to add a single outlet soon. Specifically, the second official Sega store is set to debut in Tokyo, nestled within the Shibuya Parco department complex, during the summer.

You’ll likely have to wait a few years before you find a Nintendo store outside of Japan, as there are only five such stores worldwide, with all but two located within Japan itself.

According to Sega’s President Shuji Utsumi, as reported by Kyodo, his aim is to share the unique appeal of Sega with a wide audience in Shanghai, a city known for its rich gaming culture. Sonic the Hedgehog was even present to assist with the grand opening ceremony.

In a crowd of Sonic blue and a touch of Persona, some may have spotted symbols of Sakura Wars. Originating in Japan for the Sega Saturn back in 1996, it later made its way to the Dreamcast four years later. The franchise took a break for the most part, with the latest release being Sakura Wars or New Sakura Wars (depending on where you’re from) in 2019, but no new installment has been announced yet.
