As a devoted Marvel enthusiast, I can’t help but marvel (pun intended) at the vast and ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe. From the big screen to the small one with my Disney+ subscription, it feels like there’s always a new project to dive into. And let me tell you, Sebastian Stan has been an integral part of this universe since way back in Phase One, portraying Bucky Barnes with unwavering dedication that continues to this day.
I must admit, filming Avengers: Endgame without a complete script was quite the challenge for him at the time. But he handled it like a seasoned professional, as we’ve come to expect from this talented actor.
Stan Barnes, who reprised his role as Bucky in “Thunderbolts,” has been making waves both on screen and among critics. Despite obtaining all the necessary details for this film, “Infinity War” and “Endgame” were kept under tight wraps as classified operations. During an interview on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, the actor formerly known as “The Apprentice” was queried if he ever had to act in the Marvel Cinematic Universe without understanding the in-universe context. He admitted:
As a passionate film enthusiast, I must admit that I found myself in a challenging position while working on Avengers: Endgame. Unlike some others, I hadn’t had the chance to read the scripts beforehand. In fact, it seemed that only a select few were privy to these crucial details. When I realized my predicament, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of apprehension. Granted, I was working under the guidance of the Russo brothers and with many trusting individuals, but I’m the type who needs to understand the bigger picture. So, yes, it was tough, but that’s filmmaking for you!
It’s clear that role was tough for Stan, given his limited screen time in “Endgame,” due to Bucky being erased during “Infinity War.” Since he didn’t receive a complete script, he had to create his scenes without knowing the overall context of the movie. Marvel’s security measures are indeed strict.
On Disney+, you can now stream Sebastian Stan’s MCU adventures, including The Avengers, starting from just $9.99 per month with their new ad-supported plan. For an ad-free experience, the monthly cost is $15.99 or opt for a 16% discount by pre-paying $159.99 annually. Check it out here: View Deal
At that juncture, The Russo Brothers had already demonstrated their exceptional skills as top-tier filmmakers within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Besides “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” they skillfully adapted the complex narrative of “Civil War” and exhibited their knack for managing a large acting ensemble. This earned them considerable goodwill, despite the fact that keeping scripts away from the cast was not Sebastian Stan’s preferred method of work.
It’s intriguing to ponder which specific scenes Stan may be referring to. Tony Stark’s funeral scene springs to mind, as some cast members hinted that this was a crucial, enigmatic sequence even before cameras started rolling. This suggests they didn’t have much advance notice to polish their performances.
A striking moment for Bucky in Endgame was when Steve Rogers parted ways. He watched as his friend traveled to restore the Infinity Stones (and Mjolnir) to their proper times, and just like the audience, he was taken aback when Steve reappeared, an elderly man.
Stan is currently featured in “Thunderbolts” for its upcoming 2025 release. He’s already set to make an appearance in “Avengers: Endgame,” which hits theaters on May 1st, 2026. Here’s hoping they provide him with a complete script this time.
