FilmNation Entertainment has taken on “La Ola (The Wave),” a musical depicting the 2018 student feminist protests in Chile, directed by Sebastián Lelio. The company plans to handle global distribution, excluding Latin America, at Cannes, where the film will debut in the Cannes Premieres section.
As a devoted admirer, I’m thrilled to share that I’ve collaborated with the talented Sebastian Lelio on two of his masterpieces, “A Fantastic Woman” and “The Wonder.” It’s worth noting that for “A Fantastic Woman,” he was honored with an Oscar for Best International Feature Film. Beyond these, he has a rich portfolio that includes both the original Chilean production, “Gloria,” and its English adaptation, “Gloria Bell,” as well as the poignant film “Disobedience.
In “La Ola,” we find new talents such as Daniela López, Avril Aurora, Lola Bravo, and Paulina Cortés shining brightly. This production is the brainchild of Juan de Dios Larraín, Pablo Larraín, Rocío Jadue, and Lelio. The esteemed production company Fabula is also involved in this project. The film is jointly financed by Participant and Fremantle. The screenplay was penned by Lelio, Manuela Infante, Josefina Fernández, and Paloma Salas.
This movie tells the story of Julia, a budding musician who gets involved in the student uprising at her university. It showcases unique compositions, collectively crafted by 17 Chilean musicians, among them Ana Tijoux, Camila Moreno and Javiera Parra, under the guidance of esteemed composer Matthew Herbert, known for his work on “Disobedience” and “Gloria Bell.” The musical sequences are expertly designed by renowned choreographer Ryan Heffington, who has previously worked with artists like Sia, Florence and the Machine, Christine and the Queens, as well as contributing to projects such as “Euphoria,” “Transparent,” “Tick, Tick…Boom!” and “Baby Driver.”
