As a cinephile who has been following the world of cinema for decades, I must say that this year’s Marrakech Film Festival lineup is nothing short of breathtaking! The sheer talent and diversity of directors, actors, screenwriters, and producers participating is truly awe-inspiring.
A diverse group of directors such as Sean Penn, Tim Burton, Alfonso Cuarón, Justine Triet, Ava DuVernay, and David Cronenberg are scheduled to participate at the Marrakech Film Festival. They will engage in discussions with the public.
18 individuals involved in directing, acting, scriptwriting, and production from around the globe will engage in panel discussions about their work, personal experiences, and careers during the upcoming festival, taking place from November 29 to December 7.
This year’s Marrakech conversations program promises to eclipse the star-studded lineups of renowned international festivals like Cannes and Venice. As a follower, I am thrilled to be part of an event that brings together a diverse array of talented individuals. Among them are Iranian director, screenwriter, and producer Mohammad Rasoulof; Australian director and screenwriter Justin Kurzel; French director and screenwriter François Ozon; British actor Gemma Arterton; Brazilian director and screenwriter Walter Salles; Russian director and screenwriter Kirill Serebrennikov; Mauritanian director and screenwriter Abderrahmane Sissako (“Timbuktu”); Moroccan filmmakers Alaa Eddine Aljem (“The Unknown Saint”), Yasmine Benkiran (“Queens”), Ismaël El Iraki (“Zanka Contact”) and Kamal Lazraq (“Hounds”). Each day will feature not one, but two masterclasses, offering an unparalleled opportunity to learn from these esteemed professionals.
Among these notable figures in the film industry, Burton is experiencing a professional resurgence with his recent movie “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” which has garnered critical acclaim and grossed an impressive $450.7 million globally; Triet is capitalizing on her Palme d’Or and Oscar-winning film “Anatomy of a Fall”; Haynes recently directed the Oscar-nominated and Cannes-premiering “May December”; DuVernay directed her latest project, “Origin,” which competed at Venice; Penn was last seen in the satirical series “C*A*U*G*H*T”; Cuaron made a notable impact with his limited Apple series “Disclaimer,” premiered at Venice; Serebrennikov showcased “Limonov: The Ballad” at this year’s Cannes, alongside Cronenberg’s “The Shrouds”; and Rasoulof presented “The Seed of the Sacred Fig,” which won both the special jury prize and FIPRESCI and is considered a strong contender for the international feature film category. Salles showcased “I’m Still Here” at Venice this year, as well as Kurzel with “The Order,” starring Jude Law, Nicholas Hoult, and Tye Sheridan. “The Order” will now be opening the Marrakech Film Festival.
Led by Melita Toscan du Plantier, a key figure from the very beginning of the festival, the upcoming edition will feature Luca Guadagnino as jury president. Accompanying him will be an impressive panel of jurors which includes: Iranian filmmaker Ali Abbasi, Indian director Zoya Akhtar, American actress Patricia Arquette, Belgian actress Virginie Efira, Australian actor Jacob Elordi, British-American actor Andrew Garfield, Moroccan actress Nadia Kounda, and Argentine director Santiago Mitre.
The upcoming Marrakech event is poised to make history with its illustrious attendees, but it’s important to note that past editions have also been notable. For example, in 2018, Martin Scorsese, Robert de Niro, Guillermo Del Toro, and Agnes Varda graced the event together.
