At long last, a cherished feature is about to set sail in Sea of Thieves! However, to fully enjoy it, we’ll need to invest some hard-earned gold. Custom servers, as well as other unspecified perks, will be part of a subscription service slated for Rare’s live-service pirate game in early 2026. The team at Rare shared this exciting news during their Community Direct video on Wednesday.
In the game Sea of Thieves, interactions with both AI opponents and real-life players, who may engage in combat with each other, are crucial. With custom servers, players can establish a “personalizable playground” that offers adjustable settings for loot and enemy spawns. This private space can be used to run the “Safer Seas Fleets,” inviting friends to join without the hassle of hostile strangers. Rare has yet to disclose the pricing details for this subscription-based feature.
Among several studios affected by Microsoft’s large-scale layoffs, Rare was one of them. This event led to the termination of their project, Everwild. It is said that Gregg Mayles, a long-time employee and creative director for both Sea of Thieves and Everwild, left Rare after Everwild’s cancellation.
In a nearly hour-long Community Direct, there was no mention of the pending layoffs, the future of Everwild, or Mayles’ departure from the company. Instead, the video focused on five members of the Sea of Thieves team discussing the status of their online game and outlining upcoming features to be introduced over the next few months.
The discussion likewise encompassed the forthcoming Season 17, featuring a novel group known as The Smugglers’ League and extra loot to the game’s sandbox. Instead of releasing all new content and events at once when the season begins, subsequent seasons will adopt a more monthly structure, providing fresh content and events every month.
For Season 17, the initial month sets the stage for the arrival of The Smugglers’ League, followed by a live “heist” event in the second month. In the third month, the map’s Skeleton Forts will receive an update. Additionally, developers have hinted at Season 18, focusing on the treacherous Devil’s Roar region within the game world.
In an exciting development for dedicated fans, Rare is removing the Non-Disclosure Agreement from their Insider Program, allowing a peek at advance builds demonstrating future updates to Sea of Thieves. The developers view this action as the “initial step” towards broader discussions with the game’s community.
As a dedicated gamer sailing the virtual seas of Sea of Thieves, I can say it’s been a bit rocky for Rare lately. But rest assured, they seem determined to keep the game afloat, promising smooth sailing for us players in the foreseeable future. Here’s hoping the voyage continues for many years to come!
