Many in the entertainment industry doubted the revival would succeed, relying heavily on past successes. But after the show actually aired, it quickly became incredibly popular.
After a break of over fifteen years, Scrubs made its comeback on February 25th with two new episodes. It premiered on ABC and became available to stream on Hulu and Disney+ (internationally) the next day. According to FlixPatrol, the show was immediately popular with viewers.
While it didn’t immediately become the most popular show, that’s understandable given the strong competition on Disney+. Scrubs started in fourth place, following the already-hit , the new release , and Murphy’s The Beauty.
Within the US, the new Scrubs series debuted at number ten on Hulu, while the crime drama Will Trent was the most popular show.
What Happens in the Scrubs Revival?
This new version of the show skips over the often-criticized ninth season and picks up as if the series ended with the eighth season 17 years ago. The finale sees J.D. leaving Sacred Heart Hospital and taking a big step forward in his relationship with Elliott by moving in with him.
Fifteen years later, we learn that J.D. is now a personal doctor for wealthy clients. Meanwhile, Elliott, Turk, and Carla are still working at Sacred Heart Hospital. Turk and Carla have expanded their family – after having two children, they now have a total of four.
Dr. Perry Cox, after a two-day hospital stay prompted by a patient’s admission to Sacred Heart, convinces J.D. to return – not to practice medicine, but to take over as Chief of Medicine. Cox is finally retiring, and J.D. faces new challenges, including navigating his complicated relationship with Elliott and making difficult decisions for the hospital, its staff, and its patients.
The Scrubs Revival’s Score Overpassed the Original
The show received an 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, comparable to the 83% rating of the original series. As more reviews were published, its approval rating climbed to 90%, earning it a “Certified Fresh” badge. Audiences loved it even more, giving it a near-perfect 97% score on the Popcornmeter.
Even when it first aired, Scrubs was highly regarded for its realistic portrayal of medicine, and the new revival continues that tradition. While it now more directly addresses the difficulties within the U.S. healthcare system, Scrubs still doesn’t shy away from showing the problems and how they affect both patients and doctors.
The revival of the show is being very well-received, but it’s important to remember that the original aired in a different era – before online review sites were common. While both versions have high ratings, the revival’s score likely reflects today’s review culture and doesn’t automatically make it superior to the original.
Viewers loved that the show felt like a return to its best qualities. One review said it felt like no time had passed at all, and another commented that the show was perfect as it always had been. Dedicated fans agreed that the new installment stayed true to the original series.
Another reviewer said it’s amazing that, even after nearly twenty years, the quality hasn’t dropped at all. They were particularly impressed with how well the new version is going so far.
New episodes of Scrubs come out on Wednesdays on ABC, and then become available on Hulu in the U.S. the next day. Viewers outside the U.S. can watch on Disney+.
