As a long-time fan of sitcoms and TV shows that leave a lasting impact, I am thrilled to learn about Bill Lawrence‘s plans for a “Scrubs” reboot at ABC. The original series was a beloved staple of my television diet, and the thought of returning to Sacred Heart Hospital fills me with joy.

Bill Lawrence isn’t like Superman, but right now, he’s busy working on a revival of his cherished sitcom “Scrubs” for ABC.

It’s been discovered that Lawrence is developing a fresh installment of the show through 20th Television, which is now handling production following the merger of ABC Studios (the original producer) into 20th TV under Disney’s corporate reorganization and streamlining efforts.

Lawrence continues to be bound by his overall contract with Warner Bros. Television, allowing them some flexibility to let him collaborate with his past production partners on “Scrubs,” if the project progresses. However, it’s been confirmed that he won’t assume the role of showrunner for the new series. At present, no other arrangements have been made and there are no confirmed cast members involved.

Initially airing on NBC from 2001 to 2008 for its first seven seasons, the sitcom known as “Scrubs” subsequently moved to ABC, where it ran for two more seasons from 2009 to 2010. This single-camera comedy unfolded at Sacred Heart Hospital, showcasing the daily lives of interns, doctors, nurses, and even the Janitor within the hospital setting. The talented cast consisted of Zach Braff, Donald Faison, Sarah Chalke, Judy Reyes, Ken Jenkins, John C. McGinley, and Neil Flynn.

The show, “Scrubs,” was frequently commended for its storylines that mirrored J.D.’s character’s daydreams, which were depicted through cutaway sequences. Moreover, Braff not only played the lead but also provided narration for the series. Throughout its duration, “Scrubs” garnered adoration from both viewers and critics, receiving a total of 17 Emmy nominations across its nine seasons. Even after it concluded, the show’s popularity persisted, leading Braff and Faison to start the rewatch podcast titled “Fake Doctors, Real Friends” in 2020.

After “Scrubs,” Lawrence has been responsible for or collaborated on television series such as “Cougar Town” (which ran for six seasons), the highly acclaimed “Ted Lasso,” which is now in its second season, “Shrinking,” recently renewed for a third season in October, and the newly debuted “Bad Monkey,” featuring Vince Vaughn. All three of these shows are currently streaming on Apple TV+.

He is repped by CAA, Yorn Levine Barnes, and Mortimer PR.

During an interview with EbMaster in August, Lawrence playfully hinted that the motivation behind discussing a “Scrubs” revival might be connected to the prospects of “Ted Lasso”.

Lawrence mentioned that he appreciated discussing the uncertainty surrounding ‘Ted Lasso’ because it diverted attention from debates about whether ‘Scrubs’ would be revived. His previous comment about potentially working on ‘Scrubs’ in the next six months was made merely to avoid ongoing discussions about ‘Ted Lasso’.
