Zach Braff and Bill Lawrence, the creator of Scrubs, have shared what’s next for the show following its recent return.
The comedy Scrubs first aired on NBC in 2001 and ran for seven seasons. After NBC canceled the show, ABC picked it up for two more seasons. Now, after a 16-year hiatus, Scrubs is returning for a tenth season with original stars Zach Braff, Donald Faison, Sarah Chalke, Judy Reyes, and John C. McGinley.
As a huge Scrubs fan, I was thrilled to hear that even though ABC hasn’t officially picked it up for another season yet, Bill Lawrence and Zach Braff are already thinking way ahead! I just listened to their interview with Ash Crossan at PaleyFest, and Lawrence straight-up said he really wants to keep the show going for several more seasons after this one wraps up this week. It’s awesome to know they’ve got more stories to tell!
When questioned about how many seasons the show might have, the creator and executive producer admitted he wasn’t sure, explaining it depended on Zach Braff. Braff suggested five seasons would be a good length for the revival, saying, “Five is a great number,” and adding that he’d be happy with that, as long as Bill (Lawrence) agreed.
Bill Lawrence said that everyone involved is committed to continuing the show, though he’s unsure how many more seasons that will be. He then directly asked Zach how many seasons he’d like to see.
Zach Braff: “I think five.”
Bill Lawrence: “So probably five.”
Zach Braff: “Thanks, Bill.”
Bill Lawrence: “Cool. We okay saying that we’re done with that, then? Five?”
Zach Braff believes five is a good number and encourages people to be content with it, deferring to whatever Bill prefers.
Bill Lawrence: “There you go.”
The upcoming Scrubs revival will feature the original cast – Zach Braff, Donald Faison, Sarah Chalke, John C. Reyes, and Christa Miller – alongside new additions Joel Kim Booster, Robert Maschio, Phill Lewis, Ava Bunn, Jacob Dudman, David Gridley, Layla Mohammadi, Amanda Morrow, Andy Ridings, Michael James Scott, X Mayo, and Vanessa Baye.
The latest season, which has nine episodes, starts with JD returning to Sacred Heart Hospital as the new Chief of Medicine, taking over from Dr. Perry Cox. He finds himself working with his ex-girlfriend, Dr. Elliot Reid, and navigating the challenges and funny moments caused by the hospital’s current interns.
Bill Lawrence, the creator of hit shows like Scrubs, Ted Lasso, Shrinking, Bad Monkey, and Rooster, is returning as an executive producer. Aseem Batra will lead the show as showrunner.
Zach Braff, Donald Faison, and Christa Miller are all producers on the new season, alongside Neil Goldman, Garrett Donovan, Tim Hobert, Tad Quill, Bill Callahan, Josh Bycel, Jonathan Groff, Jeff Ingold, Liza Katzer, and Randall Keenan Winston.
The recent return of Scrubs proved popular immediately, attracting 11.4 million viewers for its two-episode premiere in late February – a record for the show. Since then, it’s been consistently performing well on ABC. Reviews have been largely positive, with a score of 89% from critics and 93% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.
ABC has confirmed new seasons of several shows for the 2026-2027 TV season, including 9-1-1, 9-1-1: Nashville, Grey’s Anatomy, High Potential, The Rookie, Will Trent, and Abbott Elementary. The network hasn’t yet decided whether to renew RJ Decker, Shifting Gears, or the Scrubs revival, but Scrubs seems most likely to get another season.
The Scrubs season 10 finale airs Wednesday, April 15, at 8 p.m. EDT on ABC.
