Scream 7 Kills at Box Office With Best Opening Ever, Beats WB & Sony Movies

Scream 7 achieved the biggest opening weekend of any film in the Scream series in its 30-year history, surpassing all previous records. The new movie from Paramount and Spyglass Media wasn’t just more popular than previous installments; it also outperformed other new releases, like an animated film from Sony and a movie based on a book from Warner Bros.

Scream 7 debuts with biggest domestic opening

The latest Scream movie, directed by Kevin Williamson who also wrote the first films, earned $64.1 million in the US and Canada from 3,540 cinemas. This breaks the previous record of $44.4 million held by the 2023 film, Scream VI. Including $33.1 million earned internationally, the film has already made $97.2 million worldwide – the biggest opening weekend in the Scream series’ history.

The latest Scream movie has done well, boosted by the return of Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott after she didn’t appear in the previous film due to a pay disagreement. Seeing familiar faces like Courteney Cox, David Arquette, and Matthew Lillard back in the cast appealed to longtime fans and also drew in a younger audience – 77% of viewers were between 18 and 44, according to PostTrak. The film also benefited from being shown in premium large formats, which accounted for 40% of domestic ticket sales. Notably, this was the first Scream movie ever shown in IMAX, where it earned $7.1 million worldwide.

Worldwide, Scream 7 earned $33.1 million from 52 countries, which is 90% of its international release. This is a 35% increase compared to Scream VI in similar markets. The United Kingdom was the top performer with $5.3 million – the best result ever for the series in that country. France brought in $4.2 million, followed by Mexico ($3 million), Australia ($2.5 million), and Germany ($2.4 million). The film is still set to premiere in Singapore, Malaysia, and Hong Kong.

Sony’s Goat continues respectable box office run

Despite the strong debut of Scream 7, several films already in theaters continued to perform well. Sony’s animated film, GOAT, earned another $12 million over the weekend, bringing its total earnings in the US to $73.9 million and worldwide to $130.5 million. However, GOAT will face tougher competition next weekend with the release of Disney and Pixar’s new film, Hoppers.

Wuthering Heights closes in on major milestone

Emerald Fennell’s film adaptation of ‘Wuthering Heights’ earned $6.95 million in its third week of release, bringing its total earnings in the US and Canada to $72.3 million and international earnings to $119.7 million across 78 countries. With a production budget of $80 million, the film has now made $192 million worldwide and is nearing the $200 million mark. This continues a successful run for Warner Bros., following last year’s hits like ‘Sinners,’ ‘A Minecraft Movie,’ and ‘Weapons’ (according to Deadline and Variety).
