Scream 7 Box Office Debut Rockets Past Projections To Shatter All-Time Franchise Record

Scream 7 is ringing up millions of dollars more than expected this weekend.

Despite some significant issues, the new slasher sequel is expected to perform well in theaters. Critics haven’t been kind – it currently has a 33% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the lowest score in the entire Scream series (only Scream 3 scored lower at 45%). The film has also faced controversy stemming from the firing of Melissa Barrera, a star of the previous two Scream movies, after she shared pro-Palestine views on social media.

According to Deadline, Scream 7 is now expected to make $60 million domestically over its first three days in theaters. This is a significant increase from earlier predictions of $40 to $45 million and sets a new franchise record for opening weekend box office. The previous record was held by Scream VI, which earned $44.4 million.

Early predictions estimated that Scream 7 would earn $60 million worldwide when it was released. However, it’s already made that much in the United States and Canada alone. Now, experts believe the film could earn $80 million or more globally once ticket sales from other countries are counted on Sunday.

Despite having a relatively small production budget of $45 million, Scream 7 has already earned that amount back and is well on its way to reaching its break-even point of $112.5 million.

It’s still uncertain how well the movie will do in the weeks ahead. Horror films often earn most of their money during their opening weekend, and it’s typical for them to see a significant drop in ticket sales – 60% or more – during their second weekend. Additionally, this new installment in the 30-year-old Scream series is facing some unusual challenges.

Melissa Barrera, who starred in Scream (2022) and Scream VI, was removed from Scream 7 due to her social media posts supporting Palestine. This caused many people to call for a boycott of the film, likely preventing it from achieving an even larger box office success. The movie’s lower-than-usual score on Rotten Tomatoes—34%—could also affect how well it performs over time.
