Unison Games, a new independent game studio, announced its debut game, Descent of Lunaris. This sci-fi dungeon crawler blends different genres and features a captivating story, engaging first-person gameplay, and a unique combat style. It will be released on Steam soon.
In 2070, a lunar mining crew detects a strange signal deep inside the moon. Almost immediately after the discovery, the base’s machinery malfunctions and attacks the crew, leaving few survivors. A global team of specialists is sent to investigate the source of the signal and a hidden world below the surface, where they will uncover a truth with the power to rewrite history.
Explore, Survive, Descend, Repeat
Players aren’t just trying to survive each level; they’re uncovering a complex mystery that challenges our understanding of what it means to be human. As they descend deeper, the lines blur – are they finding real answers, or are they being manipulated towards a predetermined fate? Are they the investigators, or are they the ones being judged? This game reimagines the classic dungeon crawler for a modern audience, acknowledging the history of the genre while boldly looking towards a potentially grim future.
Modernized dungeon crawling
Descent of Lunaris takes players through a vast, grid-based world hidden under the Moon. Each level features winding paths, clues hidden in the environment, and unsettling mysteries. As you go deeper, the dungeons change from simple tunnels into bizarre, dreamlike landscapes created by a strange force. You’ll encounter familiar buildings and legends, but warped and twisted, creating a constantly changing atmosphere that shifts from creepy exploration to a mind-bending, nightmarish experience.
The game isn’t just about making it through each area; it’s full of interesting characters who can help or hinder you, depending on how you interact with them. Discovering secret paths, challenging optional bosses, and learning the story bit by bit makes each descent feel like its own unique tale. Each area will test your team’s strength and fighting skills, but also offer disturbing insights into what it means to be human, as seen through the eyes of monstrous creatures.
Hybrid combat system
Descent of Lunaris takes dungeon combat to the next level by blending classic RPG styles. The game centers around traditional turn-based battles, similar to Japanese RPGs, where carefully building your team, choosing the right skills, and managing your items are crucial for surviving lengthy dungeon explorations. Every decision – from healing allies to using powerful attacks or saving resources – can make the difference between victory and defeat.
Okay, so at first this game seems pretty straightforward, but the more you get into it, the more complex things get – in a good way! Battles switch over to a grid system where where you stand and move really matters. You’re not just mashing buttons anymore; you’re thinking about controlling space and positioning your team. Suddenly, you’re facing way more enemies, bosses with multiple stages, and environments that can instantly kill you if you’re not careful. It’s like each fight becomes a puzzle you have to solve. I’m constantly switching up my party, trying out different character builds, and figuring out new strategies. It’s awesome because the game rewards you for thinking ahead, being creative, and taking chances. Every new area feels totally fresh and unpredictable, which keeps things exciting.
Team customization
In Descent of Lunaris, you can fully customize each operative to fit your playstyle, whether you prefer exploring or fighting. You can upgrade abilities to make them even better at what they do, or try out different combinations. Operatives can also unlock subclasses, completely changing their role – like turning a frontline fighter into a healer, or a support character into a battlefield controller. With a detailed system for skills and stats, there are almost endless ways to build your team to handle any challenge. Unique gear, leadership skills based on who’s leading, and unlockable traits add even more variety and replayability.
The strange and unsettling worlds in Descent of Lunaris, along with its bizarre enemies, will require players to work together and adjust their strategies. A team that relies only on strength might find itself overwhelmed by mental challenges or dangerous surroundings, but a well-rounded team will be able to overcome anything. Every playthrough will be unique, and the game encourages players to try different approaches, learn from their experiences, and find their own way to survive the horrors hidden beneath the moon.
Atmospheric visuals and sound
The game immediately drops you into a gritty, industrial sci-fi world: think cold metal hallways, dimly lit control rooms, and the constant drone of machines. This realistic setting quickly gives way to something much more unusual. The game features striking 2D character designs that both blend with and stand out against the detailed 3D environments, creating a sense of unease. As you venture further, things start to break down – surfaces glitch, perspectives shift, and familiar places become warped versions of themselves. You’re not just exploring the moon; you’re descending into something ancient and dangerous.
The music in Lunaris perfectly captures the game’s increasing instability, creating a constant feeling of dread. The soundtrack, featuring underground and experimental artists, changes with each level. It starts with harsh, industrial sounds, then moves to sparse, unsettling ambient textures, and finally to distorted, psychedelic beats as the game world falls apart. Each floor of the dungeon is more bizarre, distorted, and frightening than the last, pulling players further away from reality and deeper into a terrifying nightmare.
What have we done?
Descent of Lunaris is a tribute to the classic dungeon RPGs that started it all. It combines old-school grid-based exploration with turn-based combat and party management inspired by games like Wizardry, Ultima, and Shin Megami Tensei. Featuring a compelling story and a quest that questions what it means to be human, Descent of Lunaris offers a fresh take on the dungeon crawling experience for modern players.
