Scarlett Johansson’s Tense Movie Paper Tiger Gets First Images Starring Miles Teller & Adam Driver

Scarlett Johansson looks wrapped in some tense drama in the new images for Paper Tiger.

James Gray’s new crime drama, Paper Tiger, stars Scarlett Johansson alongside Adam Driver and Miles Teller. The story follows two brothers whose pursuit of the American Dream leads them into a dangerous life connected to the Russian mafia.

New photos released by Vanity Fair show Scarlett Johansson and the rest of the cast facing dramatic moments. One image features Johansson and Miles Teller in a seemingly heartfelt embrace. Another captures a warm, family scene, while individual photos of Teller and Adam Driver suggest a return to more serious themes.

The new drama, Paper Tiger, will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, starting tomorrow, May 12th and continuing through May 23rd. The film will be screened on May 16th and is competing for the Palme d’Or award.

James Gray is a familiar face at the Cannes Film Festival. He first presented a film there in 2000 with The Yards, and has since had five other movies compete for the festival’s top prize: We Own the Night, Two Lovers, The Immigrant, Armageddon Time, and now, Paper Tiger.

This film’s release gives director Gray a strong opportunity to contend for a top prize at a prestigious film festival. He’ll be competing against acclaimed international directors such as Pedro Almodóvar, Pawel Pawlikowski, Cristian Mungiu, and Asghar Farhadi, making it a tough race.

With Gray back at Cannes, Paper Tiger also brings together stars Ryan Driver and Scarlett Johansson again. They previously worked together in the 2019 film Marriage Story, where both received Oscar nominations. Their strong chemistry in that movie suggests they’ll have great on-screen dynamics in Paper Tiger as well.

Based on the initial images, Paper Tiger appears to be a compelling family drama. While the specific conflicts haven’t been fully shown yet, the film—which includes a storyline about the Russian mafia—promises to be full of suspense and gripping events.

The film is premiering at Cannes this week, so we’ll have early reviews very soon. Films that debut at Cannes often gain a lot of attention, particularly if they already have a distributor in place – in this case, NEON, who released Paper Tiger. These initial reviews will be key to seeing if Paper Tiger can build momentum for awards season later this year.
