In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the powerful character Sentry from Thunderbolts was recently introduced, but whether the MCU’s version of Superman, aka the Scarlet Witch, is more potent remains uncertain. Although it seems unlikely that Earth-616’s Scarlet Witch will reappear following her apparent demise in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the Multiverse Saga has shown us numerous ways characters can come back. One plausible scenario involves a different version taking the place of the original Scarlet Witch, but the magnitude of her abilities has led some to speculate that she might have survived somehow.
It appears that in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Scarlet Witch might be the most invulnerable character. During his brief appearance in the Thunderbolts debut, Sentry demonstrated an impressive ability to handle the team effortlessly, causing minimal harm but still overpowering them with what seemed like little exertion. Fortunately, the survival of Bob after the Thunderbolts events implies that we’ll see more of Sentry, and he may challenge the Scarlet Witch in terms of power.
MCU Scarlet Witch’s Powers Explained
Scarlet Witch Can Warp Reality
Over the course of my experience with Wanda within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, her abilities have occasionally appeared somewhat ethereal, yet they’ve undeniably evolved. In Avengers: Age of Ultron, Maria Hill outlines Wanda’s powers as “neuroelectric interfacing, telekinesis, and mind manipulation.” She employs her neuroelectric interfacing skills to instill terrifying dreams upon the Avengers, and uses mind manipulation to provoke Hulk into a frenzy. Her telekinetic powers are often marked by red energy and are the ones she predominantly relies on in combat, whether to shove adversaries or dismantle them. Since then, Wanda’s abilities have grown exponentially. Her most remarkable achievements include:
- Destroying the Mind Stone.
- Nearly defeating Thanos and forcing him to call in a hail of gunfire that would hit his own troops.
- Enthralling an entire town and completely warping reality in and around Westview.
- Creating three individuals with functional superpowers from nothing.
- Destroying the Darkhold in every universe.
In the film “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” Wanda, under the subtle control of the Darkhold, gained immense strength. She was able to move between different universes using dreamwalking. In her quest to find her lost children, she managed to outmaneuver Kamar-Taj and even defeated the Illuminati of Earth-838, a group of powerful superheroes. However, it’s uncertain if Wanda could achieve these feats without the Darkhold’s influence. Nevertheless, this scenario offers a glimpse into what Wanda can accomplish when she’s at her strongest.
MCU Sentry’s Powers Explained
Sentry Is Untouchable By Regular Heroes
Valentina Allegra de Fontaine successfully brings the Sentry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe following her persuasion of Bob to join forces with her and take on a new identity. The ensuing scene quickly escalates into a lopsided battle as the Thunderbolts try to restrain the newly-minted superhero, whom de Fontaine assumes is under her control. During this brief span, the Sentry demonstrates an array of abilities such as immense strength, swiftness, and resilience, along with the capacity for flight, telekinesis, and mentally heating objects. In just a few short minutes, he showcases his powers by:
- Telekinetically halt a hail of bullets in midair.
- Telekinetically throw Red Guardian out of the window and pull him back in.
- Seize hold of an intangible Ghost.
- Bend John Walker’s shield with his bare hands.
- Travel across the room in the blink of an eye.
- Cause Red Guardian’s knife to break on contact with his body.
- Recover from a kill switch that seemed to fry his brain.
To put it simply, Sentry’s abilities in the Marvel Cinematic Universe are much like Superman’s, including the heat vision. However, he has a significant weakness associated with the Void. The Void appeared after Sentry’s debut and is essentially a personification of Bob’s dark thoughts. While it’s reasonable to assume that the Void shares the same powers as Sentry, it adds an unsettling element: the power to send people into “shame rooms.” These rooms may not cause physical harm, but they do have a psychological impact. The Void once covered New York in shadowy creatures, causing chaos, but all victims ultimately emerged unscathed physically.
Scarlet Witch Is More Powerful
Scarlet Witch Can Change Reality Itself
From what we’ve witnessed of Sentry and Scarlet Witch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far, it’s clear that Scarlet Witch has demonstrated greater strength. This is evident when comparing their most impressive abilities. While Sentry (as the Void) can send individuals into a realm of their darkest memories, Scarlet Witch can reshape reality itself and enslave those trapped in the altered world. With the power of the Darkhold, Scarlet Witch swiftly eliminated the Illuminati – a feat she might still be capable of.
It’s possible that we haven’t yet seen the full extent of Sentry’s abilities in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), as his powers in the comics are almost boundless. However, the Void, a potential threat to him, could be a factor. Interestingly, the Thunderbolts comic series portrayed Sentry’s powers as being equivalent to a thousand exploding suns, which is less than the usual comparison of one million exploding suns. This might suggest that the Sentry in the MCU has had a power reduction compared to his comics counterpart.
