The upcoming movie titled “Scarlet,” directed by the award-nominated Japanese filmmaker Mamoru Hosoda, is set to be released domestically by Sony Pictures on December 12th. This story revolves around a fearless princess who journeys beyond the boundaries of time and space.
Hosoda’s past animated films encompass a diverse range of titles such as “Digimon: The Movie” from 2000, “One Piece: Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island” in 2005, “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time” (2006), “Summer Wars” (2009), “Wolf Children” (2012), “The Boy and the Beast” (2015), and most recently, “Mirai” in 2018 which was recognized with a nomination for Best Animated Feature at the 91st Academy Awards. Notably, “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time” was the first to win the Japan Academy Prize for Best Animation, while “Summer Wars” (2009) brought him an Annie Award nomination for Best Director and was showcased at the Berlin International Film Festival.
In his review for “EbMaster”, Peter Debruge noted that the character “Scarlet” is part of Hosoda’s 2021 film “Belle”, which had its premiere at Cannes and has since become Hosoda’s highest-grossing movie to date. Debruge also remarked that for over two decades, Hosoda has been developing a perspective on how virtual realms can enrich, complicate, and reflect modern existence. In his portrayal of an expansive alternate universe in “Belle”, Debruge pointed out that Hosoda incorporates an impressive amount of detail, making it seem like a metropolis blending elements from a dark, futuristic ‘Matrix’-esque cityscape with the intricate layout of a PC motherboard, where towering chips appear as skyscrapers in the distance.
Sony Pictures is working jointly on the production and financing of the movie alongside Studio CHIZU and Nippon TV. Sony Pictures will handle worldwide distribution for the film, while Toho will distribute it in Japanese cinemas. The producers are Yuichiro Saito from Studio CHIZU, Toshimi Tanio from Nippon TV, and Nozomu Takahashi also from Studio CHIZU. This collaboration marks Sony Pictures’ initial project with Studio CHIZU, the animation studio founded by Hosoda and producer Yuichiro Saito in 2011.
