Originally from Capcom and Platinum Games, Hideki Kamiya expresses his desire for a second opportunity to develop the now-defunct Xbox title, Scalebound.
In a recent video, Kamiya’s latest studio, Clovers, shared footage of Kamiya reflecting on Scalebound. As he converses with his team members, they discuss the game’s shooting mechanics and unique features such as the main character, Drew, using headphones and carrying a smartphone in a realm inhabited by dragons. Kamiya further compares Scalebound to an isekai series, a well-liked genre where characters from our world are mysteriously transported into fantastical realms, similar to Forspoken.
Although Clovers’ tweet about the video concludes with Kamiya expressing a desire to re-create it, the video itself does not depict this. Nevertheless, Kamiya made his feelings clear by retweeting the post and addressing Xbox chief Phil Spencer, saying, “Let’s make it happen, Phil!
Let’s do it, Phil ! 😀

Originally set for release on Xbox One and computers, Scalebound was unfortunately scrapped in January 2017. Since then, its creator, Kamiya, has expressed a wish to bring it back. It’s been rumored that discussions between Platinum Games, the developer, and Microsoft took place regarding a possible revival, but Spencer stated they’ve shifted focus away from the project.
At the moment, Clovers Studio is collaborating with Capcom on a new Okami installment, given that Capcom holds the intellectual property (IP) rights for it. As for Scalebound, since Microsoft owns its rights, there might be a resurgence in development. However, it remains uncertain if Microsoft would reapproach Platinum Games, where Kamiya used to work, or engage with Kamiya at Clovers, who was the original director of the game, instead.
