It’s somewhat surprising this is only Matt Damon’s third time hosting Saturday Night Live. He’s a dedicated actor who always throws himself into his roles, and he’s actually quite funny, though many don’t realize it. He hosted once in the early 2000s and again for the 2018 Christmas show, which featured the memorable Weezer sketch. Given his history with the show – and the fact that he grew up watching it – it’s clear he takes hosting at 30 Rock seriously. We knew he’d do a good job, but the real question was what topics he’d cover: would it be about Boston, the controversial trailer for The Odyssey, an appearance by Ben Affleck, or maybe a sketch in the style of Nate Bargatze?
Only one of his potential appearances actually happened. However, the show immediately gave him plenty to do; he was a standout performer throughout the entire episode, starting with the opening sketch where he returned as Brett Kavanaugh. That sketch featured Pete Hegseth (played by Colin Jost) and Kash Patel (Aziz Ansari) alongside him, all catching up at a bar. There were a lot of genuinely funny moments, and I liked the change of scenery. It was also good to see the show give James Austin Johnson a little bit of a break. Matt Damon’s opening monologue was appropriately themed for Mother’s Day, and included a pre-recorded video message jokingly promoting a movie that isn’t even out for several weeks. It was short and sweet, which worked well, because Damon is naturally funny and engaging, so it was a great way to kick things off.
This episode was packed with great performances in a short amount of time. Two of his physical characters – a spit-take-prone admiral and a dancing substitute teacher – were particularly funny. While the dancing sketch ran a little long and felt repetitive, his overall energy kept it entertaining. I especially appreciated the writing in every sketch, which is rare. Even his smaller roles, like a husband or a Bostonian, were delivered with excellent timing. The final sketch, where he played a cheating auctioneer, was a standout and left me wanting to see him tackle more unusual and quirky characters. I’d love to see him host again soon and explore that potential!
I was disappointed not to see Ashley Padilla in many of the live sketches this week, and Ben Marshall didn’t seem as prominent in this episode either. However, the cast as a whole feels much more solid now, especially considering how many people left at the beginning of the season, and with Bowen Yang’s departure mid-season. While Padilla is usually a standout, even without her in the live sketches, the rest of the cast is really stepping up, and the newer featured players – particularly Veronika Slowikowska and Jeremy Culhane – are starting to shine. Because of this improvement, I’d say this was one of the best episodes of the season so far. Even the less successful sketches, like the one about the substitute teacher and the Mother’s Day movie, were still fun to watch and had plenty of good jokes.
Here are the highlights:

I absolutely love when someone does a spit take – it always gets me! In this sketch, Matt Damon plays a Navy admiral on a submarine, receiving updates about a scary creature in the water. Whenever one of his crew members (Mikey Day) shares information, the admiral unexpectedly spits his drink all over him. We know it’s coming, but the timing is always a surprise. The line, “Can I get some of that runny, lumpy yogurt that I like?” is especially funny to me. Damon is brilliant – his spit takes are perfectly timed and powerful, and he really drenches Day. I can’t say I’d handle being covered in yogurt like that any better than Mikey Day does, especially when Damon is serving it up with such enthusiasm!
Tough Guys

It’s funnier to hear Damon adopt a Boston accent than to watch him constantly lose fights. The sketch features Damon, Marcello Hernández, and Kenan Thompson at a barbecue, each sharing stories about trying to stand up to ‘tough guys’ – and failing miserably. The stories of their beatings are hilarious, and the guys’ willingness to believe each other makes it even funnier. One particularly funny line is, ‘This guy, he blows me up like I’m a friggin’ balloon,’ followed by, ‘That’s a unique punishment.’ Hernández’s delivery is reminiscent of Sebastian Maniscalco, which works well. And the little kid at the end doing a ‘quarter check’ is a great touch.
Tidy Care Crystals

This funny commercial spoof features a couple, Damon and Padilla, who try out a new cat litter that’s supposed to change color when wet. However, their litter box keeps showing up with blue spots. The voiceover (James Austin Johnson) eventually reveals that blue actually indicates human urine! This drives the couple to frustration, and Damon’s husband suspects their son, played by a hilariously embarrassed Andrew Dismukes. The humor comes from the couple’s bickering, combined with their shared annoyance at the mischievous narrator. Luckily, the narrator admits he caused the confusion, adding, “Oops! Blue can also mean dog urine.”
Weekend Update

Honestly, most of the monologue jokes didn’t really stick with me this week – except for the bit about the parrot getting a BBL, which was genuinely hilarious, even if the audience wasn’t feeling it as much as I was. But the real highlight for me was the guests at the desk. Jeremy Culhane’s impression of Tucker Carlson talking about the Met Gala was amazing. He absolutely nailed the way Carlson speaks, and that little ‘Huh!’ he does always cracks me up.

Jane Wickline’s new song is a funny and relatable take on being consistently late. It playfully justifies tardiness, even celebrating it! The lyrics, like the line about being 40 minutes late and paying with a check after a long wait, create a vivid image, and Wickline’s dry, slightly annoyed vocal style is genuinely humorous.

Mikey Day and Marcello Hernandez showed up dressed as dolphins behaving wildly, which was perfect – I love comedy involving animals acting out of character. It’s a simple pleasure of mine! Their costumes and a bucket of fish led to some really funny physical comedy, like when Hernandez playfully smacked Colin Jost with a fish.
Auctioneers

The final sketch was a standout. Damon and Sarah Sherman played a married couple – auctioneers – whose bickering revealed a crumbling relationship. They argued about his character’s absence and her drinking, all while rapidly reciting auction-style numbers and names – it was impressive they didn’t stumble! The sketch ended with their four sons and a neighbor (Johnson) joining in, which was a clever addition that kept the humor fresh.
Cut for Time
• Damon’s quivering delivery of the phrase “male loneliness” in the cold open really got me.
• Marcello’s mom looks incredible?
• “He’s rolling away, and I go, ‘Is that all you got?’ Big, big mistake on my part.”
Noah Kahan’s concert was really well-attended. I wasn’t familiar with him before, but he seemed like a great performer!
• I like the Marco Rubio/Marco Polo gag during Weekend Update.
• “To world peace!” “Should be any day now.”
The pre-taped “Mom Movie Trailer” was also a highlight. It could have been repetitive, but Padilla made it fantastic. She’s incredibly believable as a mom, and it’s her attention to detail that really shines. For example, when Veronika Slowikowska’s character announces she’s expecting twins, Padilla’s spontaneous and joyful reaction of simply saying “TWO!” is both hilarious and genuinely touching because it feels so real.
