As a seasoned cinephile who has traversed the labyrinth of global cinema, I find myself captivated by the intriguing synopsis of “Can I Get a Witness?” This poetic and satirical sci-fi fable by Ann Marie Fleming promises to be an engaging exploration of a not-too-distant future. Having followed Fleming’s diverse body of work, ranging from fiction, documentary, and animation, I am eagerly anticipating this unique blend of genres.
Film distributor Visit Movies gains the right to sell “Can I Get a Witness?” internationally, with the exception of Canada. This is a thoughtful and humorous science fiction fairytale penned and helmed by renowned Canadian filmmaker Ann Marie Fleming.
The movie made its debut on the global stage in Toronto, and it’s been chosen for competition screening at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival. Mongrel Media plans to distribute the film throughout Canada.
The movie takes place in a near future where we’ve managed to resolve all global issues: stopped climate change, eliminated poverty, and established harmony among all species. However, there’s one twist… Humans must terminate their lives at age 50, and young artists are tasked with recording these events. Today is Kiah’s debut on the job.
Keira Jang makes her feature film debut in ‘Can I Get a Witness?’ alongside Sandra Oh from ‘Killing Eve’ and Joel Oulette of ‘Trickster’. This movie is produced by Ann Marie Fleming, Raymond Massey (from ‘Iron Road’ and ‘Meditation Park’), Ruth Vincent (‘Window Horses’, ‘Ed, Edd and Eddy’) and Haydn Wazelle (‘Hector and the Search for Happiness’, ‘Hello Destroyer’), with Sandra Oh also serving as an executive producer.
Fleming expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with Visit Films, appreciating their insightful grasp of the evolving landscape of film distribution and the ways an independent production can prosper within it. He feels that they are true partners in determining how the movie ‘Can I Get a Witness?’ will make its mark on the world.
Fleming’s career in filmmaking spans various genres, encompassing fiction, documentaries, and animations. Among her short films are “You Take Care Now” (1990) and “Blue Skies” (2002), while her feature-length works include “The Magical Life of Long Tack Sam” (2003) and “Window Horses,” which made its debut at the Toronto Film Festival in 2016.
