Sarah Michelle Gellar Urges ‘Buffy’ Fans to Avoid Reading Leaked Reboot Scripts

Fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer were disappointed to learn that Hulu canceled the planned continuation of the series. The show would have brought back Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy Summers, and while it wasn’t a reboot, it would have continued the original story with a new team of heroes. It was unclear if other actors from the original series would have returned, but Gellar had been preparing to reprise her role. Ultimately, Hulu decided not to move forward with the project, leaving many fans upset.

Many reboot series face similar challenges, like the planned Lizzie McGuire revival for Disney+. Now, as more details emerge about the cancellation of the Buffy: New Sunnydale reboot, fans are discovering a new layer to the story.

Sarah Michelle Gellar responded to the online leak of scripts from the canceled Buffy reboot in an interview with The Wrap. She called the leak “unfortunate” and asked fans to avoid reading them, explaining that the leaked pilot episode doesn’t represent the show that could have been and won’t align with what fans were hoping for.

She drew a parallel to the canceled Batgirl movie from 2022, which was nearly completed before Warner Bros. decided not to release it on HBO Max. Unlike that film, which was shelved before finishing, she clarified that her team intentionally created a pilot episode to introduce the characters and lay the groundwork for the series’ direction.

I’m hoping the pilot doesn’t get leaked, because then everyone will have an opinion before we’ve had a chance to refine things. The pilot wasn’t a completed season, unlike ‘Batgirl,’ which was fully finished. We intentionally created a pilot to test out some new characters and see how they work. This allows us to learn from it and make necessary improvements before moving forward.
