Fans have been ecstatic since they learned that the highly-anticipated supernatural drama has cast Ryan Kiera Armstrong as Buffy’s apprentice. Over the past week, their excitement has grown even more, and they aren’t alone. The original actress who played Buffy, Sarah Michelle Gellar, is also thrilled about this development.
In a recent chat, Gellar expressed her thoughts on the upcoming reboot. During this discussion about Buffy’s significance, she shared her fervent wish for the revival to provide solace and comfort to viewers, as many girls from the ’90s and early 2000s found great consolation in the original series, especially young lesbian viewers who felt a strong connection with Alyson Hannigan’s character, Willow.
Gellar continued, “For me, the most significant aspect is discovering that Buffy, despite being years old, continues to resonate with new viewers. It’s not just nostalgia; it still speaks to people watching it for the first time, helping them recognize themselves, their friends, and even find their chosen family. In these increasingly divisive times, I believe we need that sense of community more than ever, so I aspire to create a new chosen family with future interpretations.
As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but notice hints suggesting that Armstrong could become part of Buffy’s chosen family in the reboot. However, the question lingers about the original “Scooby” gang’s appearance in the revamped series. Unfortunately, it seems we won’t see Dawn, Buffy’s sister, returning due to the unfortunate passing of actress Michelle Trachtenberg this year.
Buffy Has Been The Center Of A Big Controversy
One individual who has no involvement in the remake is Joss Whedon, the original series creator and showrunner, due to allegations of abusive and intimidating conduct on set by members of the Buffy cast, such as Trachtenberg and Carpenter. These accusations seemed to have effectively ended any possibility of a Buffy reboot – until acclaimed director Chloe Zhao took over, with some believing she was more suitable for a narrative revolving around a powerful woman.
Zhao successfully persuaded Geller that a reboot was an exciting opportunity. As Gellar put it, “Every pitch I had heard felt like just another attempt to bring back Buffy. However, the enthusiasm [Zhao] showed me, her vision for the series and the character, and why ‘Buffy’ is relevant now – it was the first time I truly understood, ‘There’s a purpose for this.’
She continued by saying, “We won’t proceed unless it’s absolutely correct and there’s absolute justification,” she added. “The main purpose of an antihero is to be a hero for those who don’t fit into the mold, those who are unlike everyone else. That’s who I want to create stories about.” This includes them, as well as those searching for their chosen family.
A premiere date has not yet been set for the Buffy reboot.
