As a devoted fan of Saoirse Ronan‘s enchanting performances, I can empathize with her heartfelt reminiscence about the role she almost played in the “Harry Potter” series – Luna Lovegood. Losing out on such an iconic character must have been a bittersweet experience for her, especially given her affinity for Irish roles and the magical world of Hogwarts.
In a recent chat with Jimmy Kimmel, Saoirse Ronan admitted she’s struggled to move on from missing out on the opportunity to play Luna Lovegood in the “Harry Potter” series. Evanna Lynch originally took up the beloved role in 2007’s “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix,” and went on to portray her in the subsequent films: “Half-Blood Prince” (2009), “Deathly Hallows – Part 1” (2010), and “Deathly Hallows – Part 2” (2011).
Ronan mentioned, ‘There are times when I’ve made decisions and later regretted them, thinking ‘Oh dear, that was a mistake.’ However, one moment that has lingered in my memory is when I didn’t get a role. I didn’t refuse it; I simply didn’t win the part. It seems to be a recurring theme for me.’
I tried out for Luna Lovegood from ‘Harry Potter’ years ago since she seemed like an Irish character, and as a result, they invited everyone of Irish descent to audition – practically half of Ireland! I knew I didn’t have a chance because I was too young at the time, but getting to read a scene that would be in ‘Harry Potter’ was absolutely amazing.
In a different turn of events, Ronan could have been part of the “Harry Potter” series, but instead, she kick-started her career that earned an Oscar nomination in the same year “Order of the Phoenix” was released. This was all due to the debut of “Atonement.” At the tender age of 12, Ronan filmed this drama, which might have been a reason why she didn’t get the role of Luna Lovegood. However, her remarkable performance in “Atonement” earned her an Oscar nomination for best supporting actress.
