Sandra Oh will be appearing in the upcoming psychological thriller “Child’s Play,” as confirmed by recent announcements, and EbMaster has exclusive news about this project directed by Wang Xiaoshuai.
Bankside Films has taken up the project for a movie scheduled to commence filming in September, with scenes shot in Toronto and North Bay, Ontario. They plan to showcase this production to potential buyers at Cannes.
As a movie enthusiast, I can’t wait to delve into “Child’s Play,” a chilling psychological thriller that explores themes of guilt and redemption. This captivating film is penned by the exceptionally talented Hannah Moscovitch, whose current Off-Broadway play, “Sexual Misconduct of the Middle Classes,” features none other than Hugh Jackman in the lead role. Interestingly, this gripping movie adaptation is derived from a short story authored by Alice Munro with the same title.
The movie chronicles Marlene Lee, a young woman in 1983 whose parents were Chinese immigrants, who attends an all-white girls’ summer camp. To fit in and win over her new friend Charlene, Marlene does something that will shape her life dramatically. Fast forward to 2024, where Marlene has built a thriving political career aimed at creating significant societal improvements. However, as she nears a crucial election victory, old demons from her past reemerge when she is compelled to confront Charlene again.
I’m delighted to be part of the team producing “Child’s Play,” alongside Niv Fichman from Rhombus Media, Mike Goodridge from Good Chaos, and Liu Xuan from Dong Chun Films. Stephen Kelliher will serve as executive producer for Bankside Films, while Elevation Pictures will release the film in Canada.
Kelliher was instantly drawn to this remarkable script and is thrilled to collaborate with a director whose talent they’ve long respected,” he stated. “Alongside the talented Sandra Oh, this project promises to deliver a movie that global audiences will undoubtedly appreciate.
Xiaoshuai is a groundbreaking figure in the independent Chinese film scene, with his movies being featured at esteemed film festivals such as Cannes, Berlinale, Venice, and San Sebastian. His 2019 production “So Long, My Son” received Silver Bears for Best Actor and Best Actress at the Berlin International Film Festival. His work “Above The Dust” was screened at the 2024 Berlin International Film Festival. Among his other accomplishments are “Red Amnesia,” “Beijing Bicycle,” “Shanghai Dreams,” “11 Flowers,” “Chongqing Blues,” and “In Love We Trust.
An actor and producer with a Golden Globe, BAFTA nomination, and Emmy award under their belt, Oh boasts an impressive filmography spanning projects like “Quiz Lady,” “Turning Red,” “Sideways,” “Last Night,” and “Under the Tuscan Sun.” On television, they’ve been seen in shows such as “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Killing Eve,” “The Chair,” and “The Sympathizer.
