The city of Málaga, Spain, will soon be a global spotlight in the realm of popular culture as it plays host to the debut of the international version of the renowned San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC), marking its first international appearance.
For over five decades, I’ve been eagerly anticipating San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC), a must-attend event for lovers and innovators of comics, films, TV, and all things pop culture. Now, SDCC is making history by expanding its reach beyond the U.S., with Malaga, Spain, being selected as its first European host city. This significant move was announced today at a glamorous unveiling event held at Gran Hotel Miramar in the beautiful Spanish coastal city.
Due to an arrangement made by IMG Licensing, San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) will conduct its inaugural licensed event overseas this year from September 25th to 28th. This marks the start of a fresh era for the convention, as it brings its comic and cultural festivities to European spectators for the first time. The importance of Malaga’s cultural significance has been underscored with backing from the Junta de Andalucía and the Malaga City Council, both of whom have played crucial roles in turning the city into a center for digital arts, pop culture, and technological innovation.
David Glanzer, SDCC’s chief communications and strategy officer, expressed enthusiasm about the day’s announcement: “We’re thrilled to honor comics and pop culture, as well as to bring Comic-Con’s distinctive atmosphere to European audiences. Málaga, with its vibrant energy, artistic flair, and warm hospitality, is the ideal location for our groundbreaking expansion.”

David Glanzer, SDCC’s chief communications and strategy officer, commented on today’s announcement: “We can’t wait to showcase comics and popular arts, and to share Comic-Con’s special essence with European viewers. Málaga, a city brimming with energy, creativity, and warmth, is exactly the place we envisioned for this significant expansion.
The event was a glitzy gathering, led by renowned Spanish actor and director Santiago Segura. It attracted notable figures from politics, culture, and entertainment. Notable attendees included Juan Manuel Moreno Bonilla, President of Andalusia, and Málaga’s Mayor, Francisco de la Torre Prados. Both stressed the importance of hosting SDCC in Málaga as part of the city’s expanding influence in the international cultural and digital arts arena.
Hosting SDCC presents a priceless chance for our local administration to demonstrate Andalusia’s standing as a hub of both cultural and technological prowess. As Bonilla pointed out, this event will solidify Andalusia’s position at the forefront of digital art and pop culture. This region is crucial in nurturing creativity and innovation.
On Monday, over 200 figures from various sectors of the entertainment world – namely filmmakers, actors, and artists like Álex de la Iglesia, Carolina Bang, Paco Plaza, and Natalia Verbeke – congregated to rejoice in the exciting revelation that was made.
The occasion reached its peak when the 501st Legion took over with Stormtroopers and Darth Vader putting on an impressive show. The attendees enjoyed a festive gathering centered around special cocktails, and to make it even more unforgettable, a flash mob danced to the famous “Mission: Impossible” tune.
The excitement for San Diego Comic-Con Málaga is now formally underway! As the inaugural licensed event in Europe, San Diego Comic-Con Málaga brings together an innovative assembly of enthusiasts, artists, and influential figures in the industry like never before.
