As a lifelong cinephile who has traversed the globe to immerse myself in the rich tapestry of global cinema, I find myself captivated by the announcement of “Samurai Saint.” The fusion of historical drama, spiritual journey, and anime-style animation promises a truly unique and compelling cinematic experience.

Singapore’s Silver Media Group is collaborating with American firms Ford Studios and Ark Entertainment to produce “Samurai Saint,” an animated film based on the actual events of Takayama Ukon, a 16th-century samurai who opted for exile instead of abandoning his Christian beliefs.

The project was introduced during the first JAFF Market, which runs concurrently with the Jogja-Netpac Asian Film Festival in Yogyakarta, between December 3rd and 5th.

This narrative, set amidst the chaotic Sengoku era of Japan, chronicles the rise of Ukon through the military hierarchy of feudal Japan and his subsequent exile along with 350 other Christians when he refused to renounce his faith under duress from the Imperial Regent. In 2017, Ukon was beatified by the Catholic Church, making his story a captivating blend of historical events and spiritual transformation.

As a movie enthusiast, I stumbled upon Ukon’s tale earlier this year and it left a lasting impression on me. ‘Samurai Saint’ is not just a film for me; it’s an inspiring inheritance. In a ruthless world where some people don’t hesitate to stoop low for their self-serving ambitions, Ukon’s relentless pursuit to shield his people amidst severe persecution for his convictions has etched an unforgettable image in my mind. Our goal with this movie is to share his extraordinary tale of love, honor, and bravery with the world at large.

The undertaking unites seasoned professionals such as Marc Ford, a former studio executive with experience in popular series like “Fantastic Four,” “X-Men,” “Star Wars,” “James Bond,” and “Ice Age.

In Ford’s words, “The ‘Samurai Saint’ isn’t simply a movie; it’s an outstanding blend of contemporary cinema elements.” He further explained, “Given the skyrocketing popularity of anime, worldwide interest in Japan-focused tales, and the growing demand for impactful biopics, this project is ideally suited to appeal to audiences globally. Upon hearing Gin Kai recount the astonishing tale of Takayama Ukon, I was instantly captivated. His journey is nothing short of extraordinary, and I’m incredibly excited to collaborate with Gin Kai on co-writing and co-producing this film.

The animation studio known as Core Works Force, which boasts a roster of artists who have contributed to projects like “One Piece,” “Dragonball Z,” Netflix’s “Castlevania Season 4” and “Castlevania: Nocturne,” will be responsible for the 2D anime-style animation. This collaboration brings together skilled artists from Japan, Hong Kong, and the Philippines.

As an avid fan, I’m excited to share some exciting news straight from the horse’s mouth, or rather, Ross Campbell, CEO of Ark Entertainment. He’s spilled the beans about additional plans for the upcoming film “Samurai Saint.” This action-packed masterpiece is destined to captivate audiences with its grandeur, and the heartwarming tale it tells will surely tug at your heartstrings. But here’s the real kicker – they’re also developing a role-playing game inspired by the film! This means that Ukon’s world will be within reach for a whole new wave of gamers, and I couldn’t be more thrilled about it!

Production is due to begin in the first quarter of 2025.
