According to Sam Witwer, Darth Maul will say what he considers to be his greatest line in the new animated series, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord.
The voice actor has portrayed Darth Maul in many Star Wars productions, including the animated series The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, the Lego Star Wars games The Empire Strikes Out and Terrifying Tales, the film Solo, and several Star Wars video games. He’s now back in the studio to voice the character again for Maul – Shadow Lord.
I was reading an interview with Sam Witwer over at ScreenRant, and he was talking about some of his most memorable lines as Maul in Star Wars. It was really interesting to hear that iconic ‘Kenobi!’ shout wasn’t even scripted! He actually had the crew record him just improvising it, which is amazing. And he hinted that we haven’t even heard the best of his Maul yet, especially in the upcoming Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord. I’m definitely excited to see what he brings to the role next!
Initially, the team was confused about what Witwer wanted. He strongly suggested they film him performing something. They followed his advice and later included the footage in a video game.
Looking back, he now understands he sensed that line of dialogue would resonate with fans, despite initial skepticism from others. Dave Filoni created a fantastic foundation, and Witwer simply perfected it.
Looking back, I had a feeling something was up. I remember telling the sound crew on set that they should record me the next day, and when they asked why, I just started yelling ‘Kenobi!’ repeatedly. I told them to hold onto the recording, hinting it might be useful later. They eventually contacted me, realizing what I’d been up to and wanting to include it in the game. I was happy with that! To be clear, though, Dave Filoni wrote the really brilliant material. I just contributed a small part – I knew what that little extra touch would be, but he created the whole thing.
Sam Witwer thinks the new Maul – Shadow Lord series has several truly unforgettable scenes. He doesn’t know which ones fans will turn into memes yet, but he’s confident it will happen.
It was the perfect finishing touch to an already amazing season. Honestly, it’s hard to put into words just how many great moments there were. It’s fascinating to think about what might become popular online, though I’m not sure what specific highlights people will focus on just yet.
Despite delivering several famous lines throughout his career, Ray Park’s voice actor, Sam Witwer, revealed that his personal favorite line from the entire Star Wars saga was never actually included in the final films or shows.
The actor shared his favorite line from the Maul – Shadow Lord series, saying, “You haven’t heard it yet, but it’s coming – just a little bit.” The line was written by the series’ head writer, Matt Michnovetz, and the actor believes it’s exceptionally well-written, calling it “terrific.”
Witwer didn’t want to give away any spoilers, but he revealed that the line is written in perfect iambic pentameter – a poetic rhythm with ten syllables that alternates between stressed and unstressed beats. He described it as “an incredible and very cool line.”
There’s a line in this show, delivered by Maul, that’s easily my favorite ever. It’s so well-written – actually, it’s in perfect iambic pentameter! Michnovetz came up with it, and I just think it’s brilliant. It’s a really incredible and cool moment.
Viewers will discover the meaning of Witwer’s comment when the series premieres. However, based on what he’s said, this particular moment likely won’t appear until later in the season. New episodes will be released every Monday, with the finale arriving on May 4th – also known as Star Wars Day.
I’m really excited to see Sam Witwer continue his work in the Star Wars universe! In the new Maul – Shadow Lord story, as the Empire is rising, his animated character is going to take on a new apprentice after the Clone Wars have ended. It’s going to be great!
The show features a talented cast including Gideon Adlon, Wagner Moura, Richard Ayoade, Dennis Haysbert, Chris Diamantopoulos, Charlie Bushnell, Vanessa Marshall, David W. Collins, A.J. LoCascio, and Steve Blum.
As a huge fan, I’m so excited about the Star Wars series! It’s all thanks to Dave Filoni, who not only created it but also works as an executive producer with an amazing team – Athena Yvette Portillo, Matt Michnovetz, Brad Rau, Carrie Beck, and Josh Rimes. They’re all doing incredible work!
Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord premieres Monday, April 6 on Disney+.
