As a die-hard Marvel fan, I can’t hide my excitement over the upcoming “New Avengers” unveiling in Thunderbolts. Yet, I can’t shake off this lingering feeling that Sam Wilson was short-changed. Frankly, it seems like the new Captain America’s thunder was snatched away from him, and I believe he deserved a more fitting role.
In the comic book series titled “Thunderbolts“, an unusual group of heroes consisting of Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, John Walker, Red Guardian, Ghost, and Bob Reynolds (Sentry) are introduced as a fresh team. However, the shocking revelation at the end of “Thunderbolts” implies that this new team will be known by another name entirely: The New Avengers. Given this, it seems that the disregard displayed by the Thunderbolts towards Sam Wilson’s Captain America and his own Avengers objectives may play a significant role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s upcoming storyline.
Man, I Was Not Expecting Thunderbolts* To Disrespect Sam Wilson’s Avengers
It’s Teased That Captain America Already Has An Opposing Team of Heroes
At the culmination of Thunderbolts*, Val publicly acknowledges at a press conference that the Thunderbolts were secretly her New Avengers. This move served to restore Val’s reputation after the Void’s assault on New York and shield her from any potential retaliation from the Thunderbolts. Interestingly, this change also benefits the Thunderbolts/New Avengers, as Yelena confirms when she whispers to Val that they now have control over her.
Indeed, the closing scene after the credits for the movie Thunderbolts* shows the New Avengers running their operations from both the Watchtower and the Avengers tower 14 months down the line. Sporting a fresh Avengers “A” emblem, updated uniforms, cutting-edge AI technology, and even aircraft, it appears that these enhancements have come at the cost of Val and O.X.E Group. Yet, the post-credits scene hints that Sam Wilson’s Captain America is not entirely pleased with this new team of Avengers.
The final scene of “Captain America: Brave New World” had Sam indicating his intention to reform the Avengers. However, it’s quite unexpected that the subsequent Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film, released just a few months later, introduced an entirely new Avengers team, without first disclosing the members of Captain America’s group. It appears this unveiling will likely be reserved for “Avengers: Doomsday,” scheduled for 2026.
New Avengers: Thunderbolts’ Post-Credits Scene Sets Up Some MCU Antipathy
Sam and Yelena’s Teams Might Not Get Along Very Well
In the final scene after the credits in Thunderbolts, Bucky acknowledges that he had a conversation with Sam and hints at tension between Captain America and their newly formed team of Avengers. Similarly, Yelena discloses that Wilson took it a step further by copyrighting the name “Avengers.” To add to the excitement, official social media pages for The Avengers have now been marked with copyright notices.
Given all that’s been discussed, it seems logical that the conflicts between Captain America’s Avengers and the New Avengers are likely to persist as an ongoing rivalry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). It’s also possible that they won’t see eye-to-eye in future collaborations such as “Avengers: Doomsday” or “Avengers: Secret Wars”. However, having multiple Avengers teams will likely prove advantageous when Doctor Doom eventually arises as the next significant threat to the MCU and the multiverse.
Multiple Teams of Avengers Can Only Be Good For Doomsday
Splitting Up MCU Teams Among Various Goals
Collaboration among more MCU teams could mean a greater chance for success in Avengers: Doomsday and beyond, as it provides an opportunity to strategically distribute tasks among characters, similar to the approach taken in Infinity War and Endgame. This not only enhances the narrative by allowing the audience to follow a smaller group of heroes at any given time until the climax, but also streamlines production schedules by managing the availability of various actors.
In summary, Kevin Feige has made it clear that stories such as “Doomsday” and “Secret Wars” will bring together the Avengers, Thunderbolts/New Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four to confront Doctor Doom. It’s possible that Kamala Khan and Kate Bishop’s teams, Young Avengers/Champions, might also be involved. To add some complexity, there may be residual tension between groups like the Avengers and New Avengers, which could explain any potential splits in the “Doomsday” events.
Thunderbolts* is now playing in theaters from Marvel Studios.
