Sam Altman, the head of OpenAI, appears to find it impressive that young people seek life advice from ChatGPT. During his talk at Sequoia Capital AI Ascent this month, he discussed the capabilities of the generative AI program and seemed to indicate that he appreciates users leaning heavily on his product, even at the cost of human interactions and relationships. While ChatGPT can be useful for research when it’s not dispensing inaccurate information, it still cannot replicate human connections as effectively as humans can.
Sam Altman thinks it’s “cool” that people go to ChatGPT for life advice
When asked about AI applications for younger generations, Altman stated that while older adults often view ChatGPT as an alternative to Google, young people use it in a different way. “They seldom make life decisions without seeking advice from ChatGPT,” Altman said, further explaining that ChatGPT keeps track of every conversation and connection with each individual’s life. While the convenience might seem appealing, this insight raises more concerns than excitement.
Posting on Reddit for advice can offer a wealth of diverse, impartial insights from numerous strangers. However, these internet users may not grasp every intricacy of your tale, appreciate who you truly are, or fully comprehend the specific context of your situation – aspects that only close friends and family might begin to fathom. Similarly, ChatGPT serves as a valuable tool for coding, idea generation, or grammar correction. Despite its vast trove of information, it lacks the subtleties, context, and social intricacies necessary to provide advice effectively. It’s essential that users approach its guidance with a healthy dose of skepticism, complementing it with real-life advice from people they know as well.
Regarding Reddit, a tale was posted there and some of the comments contained strong language. The leading comment expresses concern that OpenAI may be aiming to make people dependent on its advice. “Many individuals I know have already become hooked on LLMs, using them like oracles, struggling to make decisions independently (from travel planning to investment advice), and this is what manipulative figures like Altman desire…” This tool can alleviate the stress of discussing difficult subjects, such as coping with a breakup, considering whether to leave your job, or relocating from your hometown. However, it doesn’t prioritize your well-being. Instead, “It will provide information in response to your requests, but it won’t factor in what is best for you specifically in your unique situation“.
Engage in conversations with those around you. If you find yourself without a network, seek out positive and supportive people who will stand by your side. It’s easy to believe that there are numerous harmful individuals, but remember there are many kind-hearted ones as well.
