Sally Field Details Her ‘Traumatic’ and ‘Hideous’ Illegal Abortion From 1964 to Urge Voters to Elect Kamala Harris: ‘We Can’t Go Back’

As a movie buff with a deep appreciation for the stories of Hollywood and its legends, I find Sally Field’s recent Instagram post both heart-wrenching and inspiring. The tale she shares is not just about her personal journey, but also serves as a poignant reminder of the struggles faced by many women in the past, and still today.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Sally Field shared a personal video reflecting on the difficult and painful illegal abortion she experienced in 1964, before her acting career became successful in Hollywood. This harrowing event was previously detailed in her memoir “In Pieces,” but she has now brought this story to light once more, prior to the upcoming presidential election, as a powerful appeal for voters to support Kamala Harris.

Field expressed apprehension in the past about sharing her terrible ordeal, as she penned in the video’s caption. This event occurred during a period that was even more challenging than today. A time when access to contraception was limited and only provided if one was married. However, I find solace in thinking that many women of my generation experienced similar traumatic situations. I feel empowered by this thought. I believe, like me, they aspire to fight for their grandchildren and all the young women in this nation.

I’m strongly backing Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in this election, and I encourage everyone to do the same. This vote isn’t just about who fills specific offices; it extends across the board, from local to national levels, and every state matters – particularly those with ballot measures that safeguard reproductive rights. Let me emphasize, we cannot afford to regress!

In the video, the individual shared that she continues to experience deep regret about an illegal abortion due to being raised in the ’50s and having internalized societal norms. The actor disclosed that her family physician escorted her to Tijuana, Mexico after she got pregnant, where the abortion was carried out.

Field stated that we pulled over on a run-down street, one that seemed quite frightening. He parked several blocks away and pointed out a building in the distance, saying, ‘That’s the building over there.’ He handed me an envelope filled with cash, instructing me to enter the building, give them the money, and then return immediately to him,” Field recounted.

The actor described the encounter as “extremely unpleasant and deeply impactful,” stating that she underwent the process without any pain relief.

During the procedure, a technician intermittently administered ether to me, only to then remove it again. This left my limbs feeling oddly numb and strange, yet I could still sense the pain. However, as time passed, I began to suspect something was amiss – the technician was inappropriately touching me. In a state of confusion and humiliation, I tried to find a way to move my arms to push him away. The situation grew even darker when they urged me to leave hurriedly, as if the building were on fire. It was clear that my presence there was not wanted, and I knew what had happened was wrong.

At the time of the operation, Field didn’t consider herself much of an actress. However, just a few months later, she landed her breakout role in the sitcom “Gidget.” Hollywood ultimately portrayed her as the epitome of the sweet, all-American girl next door, which clashed with the guilt she harbored from the abortion.

Field stated, ‘These are the struggles women face currently – they lack the funds, resources, or knowledge when attempting to move to another state. It’s hard to imagine returning to such circumstances and subjecting our young girls and women to such treatment. Their health and personal decisions about childbearing should be respected and considered.’

Field has endorsed Harris for president since the vice president officially launched her campaign in August after Joe Biden stepped down from the ticket. The actor told EbMaster at the time: “I am so grateful to Joe Biden for his extraordinary 54 years serving this country. The decision he made to step down is heroic and that of a great man. And, as a working woman, a mother and grandmother to a very diverse group, I support the candidacy of Vice President Kamala Harris with my whole 77-year-old heart.”
