Salaud Morisset Boards ‘Under the Volcano’ Ahead of Toronto Premiere (EXCLUSIVE)

As a cinephile who has traversed the globe, witnessing the rich tapestry of human stories unfold on the silver screen, I find myself drawn to films that mirror our times and resonate deeply with our collective consciousness. The upcoming “Under the Volcano,” directed by Damian Kocur, is one such film that promises to leave an indelible mark.

International sales rights for the film “Under the Volcano,” initially slated to have its world premiere in the Centrepiece section at the Toronto Film Festival next month, have been acquired by the Paris and Berlin-based sales company Salaud Morisset.

Titled “Under the Volcano,” this second film by Polish director Damian Kocur follows the tale of a Ukrainian family as they spend their last day of vacation on the Spanish island of Tenerife. However, upon reaching the airport, their flight is abruptly halted: Russia has invaded Ukraine. Now stranded on the island, these tourists find themselves in the unexpected role of refugees.

As a movie reviewer, I find myself compelled to say that the world today seems eerily poised on the brink of upheaval, much like the calm before a volcanic eruption. However, we all comfort ourselves with the belief that such an event will not occur within our lifetime. Yet, my film paints a stark reality – one where unresolved social conflicts and the looming threat of climate change are passed on to the generations that follow us. This poignant narrative underscores the illusion of our security and demonstrates how swiftly and unexpectedly we can transition from being carefree travelers to displaced refugees, regardless of our skin color or nationality.

François Morisset, founder of Salaud Morisset, remarked: “The story’s emotional depth immediately drew me in – the striking visuals create a stark contrast against the unfolding drama. The film’s various aspects, ranging from the personal to the political, provide a complex, multi-layered narrative that will resonate profoundly with viewers and inspire thoughtful dialogues.”

In 2022, Kocur’s first feature film, “Bread and Salt,” received the Special Jury Prize in the Horizons section of the Venice Film Festival. This film has since been screened at numerous other prestigious festivals, including Cairo, Antalya, Cottbus, and many more.

As a passionate admirer, I’m thrilled to share that “Under the Volcano” is their second joint project following “As It Was.” This time, Kocur and Salaud Morisset teamed up with Ukrainian director Anastasiia Solonevych for co-writing and co-direction. Remarkably, this masterpiece was showcased in the Official Competition at Cannes Film Festival in 2023.

“The film titled ‘Under the Volcano’ is created by Mikołaj Lizut from Lizart Film and Agnieszka Jastrzębska from Hawk Art. Additionally, it has co-producers such as Grzegorz Słoniewski of MGM SA, Michał Maksym of TVP SA, and the Polish Film Institute.”

Salaud Morisset’s Toronto film lineup features “To a Land Unknown,” a Directors’ Fortnight title at Cannes from Danish-Palestinian director Mahdi Fleifel, and it serves as the main feature. Additionally, there are two upcoming short films from Cannes 2024: “Sauna Day,” co-directed by Anna Hints of Estonia and Tushar Prakash of India, and “Amarela,” directed by André Hayato Saito, a Japanese-Brazilian filmmaker.
