SAG-AFTRA May Call Immediate Strike Over Lack Of AI Protections For Voice Actors

As a long-time gamer and a proud member of SAG-AFTRA, I have witnessed firsthand the evolution of the video game industry and the vital role that voice actors play in bringing these digital worlds to life. The use of AI voices in games is a relatively new development, and as someone who has spent countless hours immersed in various gaming universes, I can’t help but feel concerned about its impact on our community.

The union SAG-AFTRA may initiate an unexpected work stoppage based on ongoing disputes over the implementation and ethical treatment of artificial intelligence voices in video games, as per their chief negotiator’s authorization. Recent communications from union leaders indicate that they view AI as a substantial concern within the voice acting industry, implying a possible strike could ensue.

According to a recent press announcement, the significant labor union is now working on revising the Interactive Media Agreement – a deal that numerous gaming industry heavyweights adhere to when producing costly games. Potential modifications to this pact might involve enhanced safeguards for AI usage, stricter safety measures during filming, and more substantial compensation.

The union stated that certain employers have objected to specific AI-related regulations in the new proposal. As a result, SAG-AFTRA gave its national executive director and chief negotiator, Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, the power to initiate a strike at once if an accord isn’t reached promptly. According to the press release, “should a strike ensue, it will encompass all services under the Interactive Media Agreement, and all SAG-AFTRA members will halt their provision of all covered services and performance of related work.”

Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, expressed agreement with SAG-AFTRA’s stance that game companies should not be granted generative AI voice training rights during dialog recording sessions. This is a significant point of contention in the upcoming agreement.

For about a year, SAG-AFTRA has been considering the possibility of a strike over the use of AI in video games. In 2023, the union held a vote to give its leaders the power to call for a walkout if needed. More recently, in January of this year, some members voiced their dissatisfaction with a new agreement reached between SAG-AFTRA and an AI voice studio.
