Sabrina Carpenter, Tobey Maguire and Mucho Espresso: Inside Variety’s Power of Young Hollywood Celebration

As a seasoned movie buff who’s seen more Hollywood sunsets than I care to count, let me tell you that the EbMaster Power of Young Hollywood event was nothing short of a vibrant, pulsating spectacle. The Santa Monica Proper hotel transformed into a hotspot for the next generation of stars, from Sabrina Carpenter to Sadie Sink, each radiating with raw talent and boundless energy.

On a lofty perch over Los Angeles on a Thursday, the renowned EbMaster celebrated rising stars in the entertainment and music sectors as part of their yearly Power of Young Hollywood series. The 2024 group featured chart-topping artist Sabrina Carpenter, breakout comedian Marcello Hernandez from Saturday Night Live, and the radiant Sadie Sink, who shines brightly in Stranger Things.

The rooftop of the Santa Monica Proper hotel was turned into a sweet pink setup with cozy suede lounging spaces. Guests enjoyed champagne (for adults only), along with Asian fusion snacks, throughout the evening. Digital influencers, TikTok celebrities, powerful agents and others mingled together while a DJ played hits by Beyonce and Kendrick Lamar.

Megan Park, previously known for her role in “The Sex Life of the American Teenager,” and her co-star Maisy Stella were recipients of the Amazon MGM Studios Breakthrough award. They teamed up to create a comedy sensation at Sundance titled “My Old Ass.” This film explores the story of a young girl meeting an older version of herself.

I’ve found that this recognition serves as a significant milestone for me, given my newfound ventures in writing and directing. It’s truly heartening to witness an increase in intriguing roles and prospects coming my way. Moreover, it’s inspiring to be part of such an open-minded, vocal, and dynamic younger generation.

Hernandez, famous for his humor based on his childhood in a Latino family, invited his mother as his date. He shared, “When I began comedy, she would always say, ‘If you ever walk a red carpet, I have to be there for the first one.’ I’m thrilled she got this chance and could take photos, wear her desired outfit, and enjoy herself. It’s been a fun experience for us both.”

The event commenced with Ramin Setoodeh, one of our co-editors-in-chief at EbMaster, taking the stage. He sparked enthusiasm by inquiring, “Is everyone enjoying a ‘brat summer’?” This was a reference to the global Charli XCX trend that’s dominating memes and Spotify playlists. Afterward, Ramin passed the hosting duties to comedian Matt Friend.

At the festival, James Charles, a popular beauty vlogger, interacted with Addison Rae, Joey King from “A Family Affair,” Chandler Kinney, Kerri Colby of “Drag Race,” and Lukas Gage from “The White Lotus.” A glamorous photo booth sponsored by CashApp attracted poses and pouts from actors like Gavin Leatherwood, singer 4Batz, YouTuber Harry Jowsey, and Owen Thiele from “Theater Camp.” Hollywood’s old charm was present in a brief appearance by Tobey Maguire, who kept it casual in a black baseball cap, engaging with attendees near the DJ booth.

In her short acceptance speech, songstress Carpenter encouraged self-belief to the audience, and then exited gracefully carrying a tray of “Me Espresso” martinis, a drink inspired by her popular tune.
