S.W.A.T. Spinoff Sparks Cast Backlash — Will OG Stars Reunite?

The third cancellation of S.W.A.T. might have created a rough patch in its 2025 TV lineup, but the show continues with an unexpected spinoff titled S.W.A.T. Exiles, produced by Sony Pictures Television. This upcoming series, consisting of 10 episodes, features a fresh group of recruits apprehending criminals, and Shemar Moore reprises his role as Sergeant Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson. Despite this, some original cast members, like Jay Harrington, have expressed sadness about not being invited back for the new show. Now, Sony TV is shedding light on the possibility of the 20-Squad making a comeback in this new series.

Alongside Harrington, David Lim, too, discussed the disappointment of the show’s cancellation and learning about the spinoff that won’t feature many original cast members. Fans are likely disheartened by this news, as it appears some beloved characters might be absent. However, don’t lose hope yet. Sony Pictures Television chairman Keith LeGoy hinted at the Banff TV Festival (via Deadline) that they are brainstorming a plan to bring back the S.W.A.T. family.

The SWAT team has a close-knit family, and we highly value their contributions. It would be wonderful to include more family members in our activities, either consistently, occasionally, or a mix, which we’re currently working out.

Initially, S.W.A.T. appeared to center primarily around Hondo, but as the series progressed, it became clear that the entire 20-Squad team was the heart of the show, demonstrating their strong bond akin to a family. The finale poignantly emphasized this familial connection, leaving viewers doubtful about Hondo joining a different team, even if he retired (which seems implausible) and was compelled back into service. However, recent statements from Sony suggest there might still be a chance for the original cast members to return in the upcoming series. Despite initial concerns, these comments offer a glimmer of hope.

It seems that despite a potential lingering tension over the handling of the spinoff, Sony appears eager to involve more of the original cast members again.

As a movie enthusiast, I’d like to point out that the continuation of the SWAT saga, titled SWAT: Exiles, seems to pick up from where SWAT left off, disregarding any hints of retirement for Hondo or his team. To put it simply, we can expect an update on the whereabouts and activities of 20-Squad, including Chris, Street, and Luca, as well as how their relationships have evolved over time. While Exiles might not replicate the original series, it should at least offer a glimpse into the lives of our favorite SWAT team members.

On the other hand, I’m becoming a bit more optimistic that some old acquaintances might join Moore in this upcoming series.

Apart from the general synopsis suggesting a failed mission causing Hondo to come back from retirement to guide a fresh squad of trainees, there isn’t much detail available about Exiles. As of now, the series doesn’t have a confirmed network yet, but production is scheduled to start this summer. This indicates that it may not be too far off before it’s presented to various networks. It’s thrilling to see the SWAT franchise continue with another show, and I can only speculate whether Shemar Moore will be the sole cast member reprising his role.

There’s still uncertainty if more Original Gaming characters will follow Moore, but the fact that Sony is considering it certainly adds a touch of optimism. At least, gaming enthusiasts can revisit their cherished 20-Squad memories by subscribing to Netflix or Paramount+.
