As a film enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the rich tapestry of Indian cinema, this latest initiative by the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa is nothing short of exhilarating! Bringing cinema to the streets, quite literally, not only democratizes the big-screen experience but also makes it accessible to a wider audience.
At the 55th edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa, cinema is being brought to the streets through a unique collaboration between India’s National Film Development Corporation (NFDC), the Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG), and Picturetime Digiplex. This special event will feature inflatable theaters showcasing a variety of films, such as S.S. Rajamouli’s blockbuster “RRR,” as well as works from esteemed filmmakers like Satyajit Ray, Mani Ratnam, and Imtiaz Ali.
During the festival from November 20th to 28th, the mobile theater project is set to include two inflatable venues seating 120 people each, located at the main event site. Additionally, a portable open-air cinema will roam between North and South Goa, offering outdoor screenings during the festival period.
At this programming event, you’ll find a mix of modern Indian cinema alongside timeless favorites. Some recent additions include Pa. Ranjith’s “Thangalaan” and Mani Ratnam’s dual epic “Ponniyin Selvan”. Additionally, films from the Indian Panorama and National Film Award categories will be shown, such as Malayalam drama “Aattam”, Kannada film “Kantara”, and the biographical drama “Aparajito” inspired by Ray’s work.
Some timeless movies are being given a unique twist with inflatable screen showings. These include “Agantuk” by Ray, “Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro” by Kundan Shah, and “Bobby” by Raj Kapoor.
Following the collaboration with the Dharamshala International Film Festival, Picturetime recently showcased a selection of films, including “All We Imagine as Light” (a Cannes winner), “Tees” by Dibakar Banerjee, and the Sundance winner “Girls Will Be Girls”, at an elevation of 5,000 feet.
As a supporter of Picturetime Digiplex, I’m thrilled about our goal to bring the joy of big-screen entertainment to everyone, especially those living in rural or remote locations. We’ve successfully brought mobile cinema experiences to extraordinary places like the Himalayan Film Festival at an elevation of 11,562 feet and the Tribal Film Festival in Arunachal Pradesh. Sushil Chaudhary, our founder and CEO, explains that this is more than just a business venture; it’s about using technology and innovation to bridge the urban-rural divide and ensure that people in these areas can experience the big-screen magic they truly deserve.
The festival is arranged by both the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) and the Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG), which fall under India’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
