A new Nature series by National Geographic is venturing into uncharted territories, delving deeply into the lower levels of the food chain.
A sneak peek at Underdogs showcases Earth’s “Superzeroes” and boasts a hit tune by Grammy-winning group Green Day. The narrator is none other than the star himself, also serving as the series’ executive producer. This five-episode series highlights and glorifies nature’s underdogs, or the less fortunate members of the food chain. Underdogs will delve into the peculiar mating rituals, astonishing abilities, deceitful tactics, questionable parenting styles, and off-putting habits exhibited by diverse wildlife, as suggested in the official synopsis.
For more than a century, National Geographic has traveled to the farthest reaches of the globe to present some of the most breathtaking nature footage ever captured on film, as Reynolds explains in the clip. However, he suggests it’s time to move away from focusing on the top predators and instead turn our attention to the lesser-known organisms that inhabit the lower levels of the ecosystem. In a unique collaboration with National Geographic, Reynolds aims to bypass the spotlight-grabbing species and delve into the often overlooked inhabitants of nature’s “reserve bench.” Instead of showcasing the superstars, he plans to highlight the underdogs – the unsung heroes of the natural world. So, let’s hear it for Green Day!
The distinctive sound of Green Day is featured in the theme song of the series, with Billie Joe Armstrong crooning, “I want to be your underdog.” Subsequently, Reynolds remarks, “In any corner where nature exhibits a persisting irritation, you’ll find underdogs.” Notably, Harry Gregson-Williams scored the music for the episodes of Underdogs, while Green Day penned and performed the series’ theme tune.
Underdogs Is Unlike Other Nature Shows
This series will feature sights rarely encountered in nature documentaries, such as a New Zealand cave that “shines more brightly than a nightclub under UV light due to the bioluminescent rear ends of countless, slimy grubs.” Seems like a fascinating show worth checking out!
In his statement, Reynolds expressed that collaborating with National Geographic on Underdogs was a long-held dream realized, primarily because it means he can now share this project with his children. He humorously added that although they had seen Deadpool & Wolverine, he doubts they fully understood it given their frequent attempts to shield themselves, scream, and hide during the two-hour runtime.
We’re thrilled to put the unsung heroes of nature center stage in the entertainment world and can’t wait for everyone to experience it,” said the actor. Nat Geo president Courtney Monroe commended the Deadpool star, mentioning, “By teaming up Ryan Reynolds and his talented crew at Maximum Effort with renowned wildlife filmmakers at Wildstar, we’re turning the traditional wildlife documentary on its head and offering viewers a unique, humorous perspective of the animal kingdom.
Underdogs debuts on Nat Geo on June 15 and will stream on Disney+ and Hulu.
