As a seasoned movie critic, I found myself pondering whether Ryan Reynolds’ charm and wit could breathe new life into the “Star Wars” galaxy in an R-rated adventure. Having seen him skillfully steer Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe with “Deadpool and Wolverine,” one can’t help but wonder if he could replicate that success within the boundaries of a galaxy far, far away.
On the latest edition of “The Box Office” podcast, hosted by Scott Mendelson, Ryan Reynolds – known for his role as Deadpool – disclosed that he’s proposed the concept for an adult-oriented (R-rated) film, taking place in a distant galaxy.
In my proposal to Disney, I suggested creating an adult-oriented ‘Star Wars’ series. I explained that it doesn’t necessarily have to star iconic characters. Instead, there’s a vast array of characters they could utilize, I added. By ‘R-rated,’ I meant using this rating as a means to explore deeper emotions, not just for vulgarity. I often ponder why studios shy away from taking risks like this.
To date, there hasn’t been a “Star Wars” film or television program rated R by the Motion Picture Association (MPAA). The most mature offering from the franchise is arguably the series “Andor,” which recently concluded its two-season run this month and tackled some serious subject matters.
As for his R-rated pitch, Reynolds says it would not be for him to star in.
He stated, ‘I’m not expressing a desire to act in it, as it wouldn’t be suitable.’ Instead, he’d prefer roles in creating and scriptwriting, or behind-the-scenes work. These types of intellectual properties thrive on scarcity and unexpected twists. Although Disney+ removes the scarcity aspect from ‘Star Wars’, there’s still room to surprise viewers.
Following “Star Wars,” comes the series titled “The Mandalorian and Grogu” featuring Pedro Pascal’s masked bounty hunter character and the adorable Baby Yoda on the big screen. Subsequently, Shawn Levy, known for directing Reynolds in “Deadpool and Wolverine,” “The Adam Project,” and “Free Guy,” is working on a new “Star Wars” production titled “Starfighter,” starring Ryan Gosling.
