Ryan Reynolds Almost Went to Jail for a Silly Sign Prank While Filming ‘Just Friends’

As a movie enthusiast, I never thought a romantic comedy like “The Proposal” (2005) would land Ryan Reynolds in legal trouble – but it came close! In this film, the actor portrayed a record producer who made an unexpected homecoming after a decade, and Reynolds himself decided to pull off a prank at home that landed him in some serious hot water.

Despite being based in New Jersey, the movie was actually shot in Regina, Saskatchewan – Reynolds’ hometown in Canada. On a recent episode of the podcast, Reynolds discussed an instance where he came close to getting arrested due to a humorous remark that drew the attention of the local police.

On rare occasions have I felt fear about possibly going to jail, and this was one of those times. You see, my friend and I from the art department decided to play a prank – jokingly replacing the ‘Welcome to Regina’ sign with another that read, ‘Welcome to Regina, which rhymes with fun.’ Unfortunately, I ended up facing consequences for it.

The actor stated that since only temporary harm occurred and the officials found it amusing rather than serious, he managed to steer clear of any jail time.

In this rephrased version, the movie titled “Just Friends” featured Reynolds portraying Chris Brander, who went back to his old town after a decade away, with the intention of capturing the heart of his former high school sweetheart, Jamie Palomino (portrayed by Amy Smart). Upon its debut, it garnered mixed opinions from critics and earned $50.6 million globally at the box office. However, it gained a broader fanbase through streaming platforms.

Ryan Reynolds Has a History of Making Jokes On and Off-Screen

It’s no wonder Reynolds is known for playing pranks, given his background in comedy before transitioning to superhero roles. His off-screen shenanigans are equally notorious, particularly with Hugh Jackman, whom he has been playfully teasing for years. However, this discussion is about the ongoing legal matter between his wife Blake Lively and director Justin Baldoni, which occurred during the 50th anniversary special of Saturday Night Live.

I, Ryan Reynolds, am said to be delving into the Deadpool franchise, where I embody the title character, Deadpool/Wade Wilson. I’m brainstorming concepts for a narrative that might include X-Men characters, though it remains unclear if Wolverine/Logan is among them. Contrary to reports, I’ve yet to express any official thoughts on Deadpool 4, a project I’m developing autonomously, without the involvement of Marvel Studios.

For now, the Deadpool movies are streaming on Disney+. Just Friends is streaming on Paramount+.
